Toronto hub for culture and food, Harlem, closes their doors on March 12th

Toronto, ON – March 7, 2017

 

After 10 successful years, Harlem Restaurant located at 67 Richmond St. E. will be closing their doors on March 12, 2017. Their second location, Harlem Underground on Queen St. W., will continue to serve up their famous Caribbean and soul food alongside a commitment to the community.

 

Carl Cassell and former co-owner Carl Allen opened the doors to Harlem Restaurant 10 years ago, to create a space for people to enjoy food, art, music and cocktails. The restaurant was inspired by the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, and celebrates the joy of Toronto’s cultural diversity and the art of entertaining.

 

Harlem represents a culinary tribute to Afro-American/ Afro-Caribbean culture through music and food. A local landmark for regular live tunes, art exhibitions, and community events in a contemporary space that’s reminiscent of another era, Harlem has hosted soul, jazz, Motown, pop, blues, R&B and funk performances.

 

“We sold the building. Someone’s going to use it for another restaurant,” owner Carl Cassell explains. “We’ve been there for 10 years. In the restaurant business, that’s like an eternity. It’s very rare that a restaurant ever gets to close on its own terms. We’re glad about that.”

 

As a decade of food, entertainment, and art comes to an end for the Richmond St location, Harlem Restaurant encourages people to come out to the closing event. To attend, guests can RSVP to the Facebook event or make a reservation on the Harlem Restaurant website.

 

To honour the closing there will be two events: on March 11th former co-owner DJ Carl Allen will be spinning along with guest DJs, and on March 12th at 1pm they will host a brunch for family and friends.
