A compelling story about a twenty-two year old Elliot Carson on the day before he has surgery to remove a brain tumor, Falling Overnight is set to premiere at the 2011 Cinequest Film Festival this March. Recently, it has also been picked as official selections at the 2011 Phoenix Film Festival and the 2011 Vail Film Festival.
Shot on a shoestring budget over fourteen summer nights, Falling Overnight tells the tale of Elliot Carson who is facing what could be his last night on this earth. Elliot’s path intersects with Chloe Webb, a beautiful young photographer who invites him to her art show.
Scared and alone, Elliot welcomes the distraction and as the night descends, Chloe takes him on an intimate and exhilarating journey through the city. But as morning approaches, and Chloe learns of Elliot’s condition, the magic of the evening unravels, and they must together face the uncertainty of Elliot’s future.
Falling Overnight was conceived by director Conrad Jackson in collaboration with writing partners Parker Croft and Aaron Golden. Inspired by the classic film Cléo from 5-7 (which follows two hours in the life of a French singer as she walks the streets of Paris awaiting biopsy results), the writing team attempted to capture the fear, isolation, and numbness that comes from being “one of the sick people”, while trying to highlight the magical and temporary nature of moments of love.
Instead of filling the story with the heightened, overly dramatic dialogue and scenes that populate much of contemporary film, the filmmakers created a lifelike world for their characters, pouring their own stories, experiences, dreams, and regrets into the script. Ultimately, it is real life that Elliot will miss, not a fantasy “movie” world.
Leading a dedicated and hard-working skeleton crew coordinated by producers Jed Rhein and Elizabeth Jackson, the filmmakers worked efficiently but meticulously to capture life’s most honest moments: a full body laugh, a dropped word, an embarrassed smile. Filmed in open restaurants, underground tunnels, and only-reached-through-a-half-hour-hike mountaintops, Falling Overnight was micro-budget filmmaking at its most vibrant and ambitious.
“I was blown away by the direction and the actors were superb,” says Marsha Oglesby of Brooklyn Films “It was a real gem.”
The film also boasts a unique soundtrack, featuring a hauntingly talented list of musicians, which includes Yukon Blonde, Blue Hawaii, Joe Organ, Toolshed, Keith Chenier, Snowbling and Vikas Kohli.
About the Cast and Crew:
Conrad Jackson co-created and produced ABC’s sitcom Freddie with business partner Freddie Prinze Jr., as well as developing television shows for MTV, Nickelodeon, SyFy, and Disney. Conrad won the PBS Independent Lens Audience award for directing and best cinematography from the Boston International film festival for his film, L.A. Noir. Recently, Jackson wrapped production on Adult Life, the first pilot to come out of his new production company DPO, and is currently developing Quantum Hunter, with Kickstart Productions, a new pilot for Syfy. Conrad is also a recipient of the Oprah Winfrey Academic Achievement Award in film at the Loyola Marymount University.
Aaron Golden is the author of stage plays Labor Pains and To Tree. Originally from London, Ontario, Canada, Golden graduated from the University of Illinois’ theatre conservatory, before moving out to Los Angeles in early 2008. His screenplay, Dead Black Clown, was a semi-finalist in the 2009 Scriptshadow screenwriting contest, and most recently he co-developed the pilot Adult Life with Conrad Jackson, currently being pitched to cable networks in Los Angeles.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Jed Rhein has produced music videos, the independent feature film The Bet, and the award-winning film L.A. Noir. L.A. Noir wrapped up the 2007 festival circuit with over 25 official selections worldwide, winning Best Cinematography at Boston International and capping the run with the coveted Audience Award for PBS Network. In 2009, Rhein produced the feature film The Outside, released domestically by Monarch Distribution in July 2010. Most recently, Rhein produced a music video for Grammy award winning artist Butch Walker and the pilot Adult Life.
Elizabeth Jackson was born on a Native American reservation in Arizona, and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She studied film at Loyola Marymount, and picked up acting on the side. After four years of college, she had finished several screenplays, and began to work regularly in television and film. Most recently, Elizabeth completed a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and continues to act (including the role of Samantha in Falling Overnight). Elizabeth’s other producing credits include the award-winning short L.A. Noir and two television pilots.
Falling Overnight is Parker Croft’s first feature film as a writer and executive producer. Parker Croft made his film acting debut in Hooking Up with co-stars Corey Feldman and Bronson Pinchot. He went on to play a supporting role in Were The World Mine, winner of 11 Jury Awards and 10 Audience Awards, and recently appeared in Nuclear Family alongside Ray Wise and Corin Nemec. Parker’s television credits include the pilots Back Nine (cr. Jason Filardi), Adult Life (cr. Conrad Jackson), and Jack and Steve (cr. Pam Dawber), as well as a guest star on Nip/Tuck.
Emilia Zoryan was born in the Soviet Union and immigrated to the United States at the age of four. A trained ballet dancer, Emilia began her career in music videos, commercials, and modeling, before making her film debut in Shane Stanley’s My Trip to the Dark Side.
