Introducing Yorkville’s newest hair salon, the Anthony Passero Salon offering patrons the ultimate beauty experience

Toronto, ON – September 22, 2014

AnthonyPasseroThe Anthony Passero Salon is thrilled to announce the opening of its brand new salon located in the heart of Yorkville at 114 Cumberland Street on the second floor.

Faced with a devastating fire in early 2014, the salon’s new location has been built to embody the new direction of the Anthony Passero Salon. Much larger in space than the previous site, the salon is now able to accommodate twice the amount of guests. The modern design and concept of the space was visualized by Anthony Passero himself to offer both old and new clientele the ultimate beauty salon experience. The bright, open space allows clients to feel relaxed throughout their appointment and leave feeling confident and uplifted.

“Our stunning new space fits all of our ideas, it’s a great new location to work with,” says Anthony Passero. “We’re back on track, happier, and more motivated than ever. With diverse staff ranging in age and style to this beautiful atmospheric space with multiple offerings, this is only the beginning of Anthony Passero Salon.”

Offering shiatsu and scalp massages, refreshments, and a relaxed environment, the salon’s key focus is their clients’ experience. With clean finishes and minimal design distractions, including a welcoming guest check-in space, clients are made to feel comfortable and at home no matter the length of their appointment. Friendly, down to earth, and experienced the Anthony Passero Salon staff ensure clients receive a tailored salon experience based on individual hair care needs and desires.

The Anthony Passero Salon has teamed up with L’Oreal Professional and Kevin Murphy to help create the very best in hair design. Additionally, products are displayed on the salon’s art-like retail wall comprised of various picture frames, allowing clients to curiously browse without being overwhelmed.

With an early interest in hair and fashion, Anthony Passero knew he wanted to be a hairdresser at only six years old. By age 12, he began shaping, cutting, and styling hair, all from watching other stylists and learning on his own. Eventually, Anthony began working at Salon Eskada in St. Catherine’s, Ontario, where he was mentored by the salon owner and lead stylist. Anthony later moved to Toronto to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce from Ryerson University. Following graduation, he immediately enrolled in Marvel Beauty Schools where he gained more confidence and knowledge, and developed a love for the Yorkville neighbourhood.

In 2009, Anthony began working with veteran hairstylist Robin Barker. For five years, Anthony was mentored while refining his skills; eventually granted the chance to take over Robin’s empire, he made the most of this opportunity and opened Anthony Passero Salon.

From October 23 – November 2, 2014, Anthony Passero Salon is participating in the sixth annual Beautylicious. Showcasing 60 Bloor-Yorkville beauty, health, and wellness specialists, participants have the opportunity to indulge in an array of specially priced hair care, skin care, spa and wellness packages.

Acknowledging the importance of philanthropy, the Anthony Passero Salon also participates in the annual Cut-A-Thon for Parkinson’s. The event is the highlight of Parkinson’s Awareness Month, offering participants the opportunity to visit an elite salon and receive professional hair care products, while raising funds and awareness for Parkinson’s.

Actor and filmmaker Mark O’Brien to direct Indie short film Who Is Hannah, featuring select cast members of CBC’s award winning series Republic of Doyle

Toronto, ON – September 22, 2014

ddy_72231Actor and filmmaker Mark O’Brien will direct Who Is Hannah, a dark comedy indie short film featuring select cast members of CBC’s Republic of Doyle.

Who is Hannah is the unlikely coming of age tale about a girl who thought she had already come of age. This quirky film is based on the true story of co-writer Claire Stollery’s experience of meeting her biological father for the first time.

Stollery plays herself and stars alongside fan favourite Lynda Boyd and Canadian screen veterans Rick Roberts and Rachel Wilson. The combination of this well-loved cast and Stollery and Hastings’ dark humour will leave audiences wondering if they want to laugh or cry.

In addition, Mark is guest starring in episode three of CTV’s Saving Hope. Going into its third season, Saving Hope is a supernatural medical drama that centres around the lives of the doctors and nurses of Hope Zion Hospital.

Upcoming, Mark O’Brien will reprise his fan favourite role as Des Courtney during the sixth and final season of Republic of Doyle. Audiences will once again get a taste of Mark’s directorial side as he directed the second episode of the new season. Season six of Republic of Doyle premieres Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at 9PM/9:30NT.

Debuting in 2010, Republic of Doyle is an award winning comedy-drama series set in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The show follows private investigator and former police officer Jake Doyle (Allan Hawco) and his father Malachy Doyle (Seán McGinley) whose cases find them involved in all sorts of dealings – not all of them on the right side of the law.

Mark’s character, Des Courtney, is a young Private Investigator, going from a delinquent to a valued member of Doyle & Doyle Investigations, specializing in the technological side of things.

Mark can be recognized for his roles on several hit series including NBC’s Hannibal, where he played a recurring role as Randall Tier, a psychotic serial killer. He has also been featured on episodes of CBC’s Murdoch Mysteries and Syfy’s Warehouse 13. In 2010, Mark starred in the Sundance Film Festival selection Grown Up Movie Star alongside Orphan Black’s, Tatiana Maslany.

Recently, Mark produced and starred in DENNIS, a short psychological thriller inspired by true events. Hitchhiking the Irish Loop of Newfoundland in the summer of 2010, director Nicole Dorsey learned of a series of unsolved kidnappings and murders that occurred through the 1980s. In this short she follows the story of Dennis, played by Mark, capturing his developing psychosis. DENNIS leaves viewers privy to an unsolved case and the possible reasoning for its occurrence.

Mark’s directorial credits can be seen in select episodes of Republic of Doyle, as well as nine short films including Better People, which showcased in 10 film festivals across Canada and the United States, and Sweetieface, seen in film festivals all across the country. Both films received critical acclaim, winning multiple awards including Best Short Film at the 2013 and 2014 WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival. Mark currently has the three features in post-production including The End of Days at Godfrey Global Inventory, Len & Company and The Dark Stranger.

When he’s not busy acting and filmmaking, Mark enjoys reading and playing hockey. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Memorial University.

More than CAD $119 million pledged so far in U.S. and Canada in connection with Sept 5 Stand Up To Cancer fundraising special

CAD $30 Million Pledged by Canadian Health Charities, Government-Funded Organizations, Corporations and the Public

Inaugural SU2C Canada Dream Teams to Begin Research in Summer 2015

Stand Up To Cancer Telecast is Available Online at https://ca.celebrity.yahoo.com/video/stand-cancer-170000054.html

SU2CC-Logo3SEPTEMBER 8, 2014 (TORONTO, ON) — More than CAD $119 million has been pledged so far in connection with the star-studded September 5 Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) “roadblock” fundraising telecast in Canada and the U.S., it was announced today. The CAD $30 million pledged in Canada will be used by Stand Up To Cancer Canada (SU2C Canada) and in some cases by collaborating organizations to support joint research efforts utilizing the SU2C model and scientific oversight. Funds pledged by the Canadian public during the telecast will stay in Canada to support the creation of collaborative research teams, as well as education and awareness programs conducted in Canada.

“We are enormously grateful to all of our donors and collaborators — from the individual television viewer to large organizations, both in Canada and the U.S. — whose contributions made the telecast a huge success,” said Lisa Paulsen, EIF Canada Board Member and President & CEO of The Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is a co-creator of the U.S.-based SU2C initiative. “All this support, as well as the entertainment community’s — both the stars who volunteered their talents and broadcast and cable networks donating air time — means so much to cancer patients who can benefit from the SU2C approach to research.”

For the first time, there was a Canada-inclusive co-broadcast of the telecast, which aired simultaneously on all four major English-language Canadian networks: CBC, City, CTV and Global, along with Canadian services AMI, CHCH, CHEK, Fight Network, Gusto TV, Hollywood Suite and TLN. The telecast also streamed live and remains available on Yahoo in Canada.

The 2014 SU2C telecast was the first of its kind for Canada. EIF Canada, a Canadian registered charity, utilizes the entertainment industry’s resources via SU2C Canada to engage the Canadian public, health charities, government-funded agencies and corporations in these efforts. EIF Canada’s charitable registration number is 80550 6730 RR0001.

“Canadians have a generous spirit and we are a generous nation,” said Rona Ambrose, Canada’s Minister of Health. “I congratulate the SU2C initiative on their truly innovative approach to supporting cancer research. I am pleased to stand with them and all Canadians who have contributed to this collective effort to tackle this disease.”

In the U.S. ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, along with ABC Family, American Forces Network, AXS TV, Bravo, Cooking Channel, DIRECTV, Discovery Fit & Health, E!, Encore, Encore Español, EPIX, ESPNEWS, FOX Sports 2, FXM, HBO, HBO Latino, ION Television, LMN, Logo TV, MLB Network, National Geographic Channel, Oxygen, Palladia, Pivot, SHOWTIME, Smithsonian Channel, Starz, TNT and VH1 donated one hour of simultaneous commercial-free primetime for the nationally televised fundraising special on Friday, September 5, broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The show also streamed live on both Hulu and Yahoo, and is still available on each.

As in 2012, the broadcast was executive produced by Gwyneth Paltrow and Joel Gallen of Tenth Planet Productions in collaboration with SU2C’s production team.

In addition to Paltrow, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Camila Alves, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Bacon, Justin Bartha, Halle Berry, Jordana Brewster, Pierce Brosnan, Steve Carell, Dane Cook, Bradley Cooper, Katie Couric, Brittany Daniel, Amanda de Cadenet, Giada De Laurentiis, Zooey Deschanel, Robert Downey, Jr., Ben Falcone, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Will Ferrell, Josh Gad, Tony Goldwyn, Topher Grace, Dave Grohl, Kathryn Hahn, Tony Hale, Jon Hamm, Angie Harmon, Mark Harmon, Neil Patrick Harris, Marg Helgenberger, Anna Kendrick, Rob Lowe, Joe Manganiello, Danny McBride, Melissa McCarthy, Matthew McConaughey, Maria Menounos, Mike Myers, Olivia Munn, Matt Passmore, Italia Ricci, Rob Riggle, Mira Sorvino, Hailee Steinfeld, Ben Stiller, Emma Stone, Eric Stonestreet, Alison Sweeney, Justin Theroux, Bree Turner, Sofia Vergara, Charlie Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, and Ethan Zohn participated in the telecast, as did MLB players Jose Bautista, Miguel Cabrera, Paul Goldschmidt, Derek Jeter, Adam Jones, Jon Lester, Giancarlo Stanton and Mike Trout. The Who; the Dave Matthews Band; Ariana Grande; and Lupe Fiasco with Jennifer Hudson and Common delivered one-of-a-kind musical performances.

Yahoo News Global Anchor Katie Couric, who is a co-founder of the U.S.-based SU2C initiative, hosted an On-Stage Digital Lounge, where participating actors and personalities stood the notion of the traditional ‘phone bank’ on its head via “We’re Calling You,” reaching out to supporters via social media and by making phone calls.

“We were thrilled with the way our celebrity ambassadors were able to connect with supporters through the on-stage digital lounge and We’re Calling You campaign,” said Pam Williams, and one of the producers of the telecast, “and it continues to keep people engaged. In just a 24-hour period, the fun thank you video Katie Couric and Rob Riggle sent to a supporter via the facebook Mentions Cube during the show was viewed more than 130,000 times!”

Both #SU2C and #StandUpToCancer trended on Twitter throughout the U.S. and Canada during the broadcast.

The show helps fund SU2C’s groundbreaking approach to translational research, accelerating the delivery of new therapies to patients by getting them from the “bench to the bedside” as quickly as possible. SU2C Canada brings together scientists from different disciplines across various institutions to work collaboratively, rather than competitively. All funds received from the Canadian general public during the broadcast will be directed towards the creation of collaborative research teams, as well as education and awareness programs conducted in Canada.

Organizations collaborating with the SU2C Canada initiative include the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, with support from The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC); the Canadian Cancer Society; the Cancer Stem Cell Consortium, with funding from Genome Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research; the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research; and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). MasterCard and AstraZeneca Canada are the first Canadian corporate supporters of SU2C Canada.

Executive Producer Gwyneth Paltrow, who lost her father Bruce to cancer 12 years ago, said, “The fight against this insidious disease is very personal for me, as it is for so many of us. One in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes, but when we all stand together, we can change the odds. When we all stand together, cancer doesn’t stand a chance. That sense of community is what the telecast is all about.”

“It’s a privilege to work with so many great names from the entertainment community to rally the public around this cause,” said Gallen, who, in addition to serving as executive producer, also directed the show. “But our goal was to remind everyone who the real stars of this movement are the brilliant scientists finding new ways to combat this disease, and the brave patients contending with it every day.”

The broadcast included inspiring stories of people living with cancer who have directly benefited from the type of groundbreaking, translational research that is encouraged and supported by SU2C.

Don Konantz of Vancouver, British Columbia, has been living with prostate cancer since 2013. Don climbed the noted and grueling Grouse Grind every morning before daily radiation treatments over an eight week period. His optimism about the rapid development of new treatment options for his disease motivated him to enter triathlon events, including an upcoming ‘Ironman’ triathlon. Despite feeling he “had no business” taking on such grueling physical challenges, “I started,” he said. “And it felt great.”

Two out of five Canadians are expected to develop cancer in their lifetimes. Every hour of every day, an estimated 22 Canadians will be diagnosed with some type of cancer, and nine people will die from the disease — the leading cause of death in Canada. The SU2C research model was founded on the belief that we are at a pivotal juncture with the potential for transformative progress in cancer research because of two trends: breakthroughs made in our understanding of the basic science of cancer, and technological advances that enable us to translate them into new treatments. Today’s cancer researchers need additional funding to fulfill the promise of life-saving discoveries, and SU2C Canada engages the public to support their work.

It is expected that SU2C Canada, with input from the SU2C Canada collaborators on the focus for inaugural dream team research, will issue a Call for Ideas in Fall 2014 and the first Dream Teams will be announced and begin their work in Summer 2015.

Research proposals will be reviewed by the SU2C Canada Scientific Advisory Committee (CSAC), which will be composed of leading researchers and co-chaired by Alan Bernstein, O.C., Ph.D., FRSC, President and CEO of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), and Nobel Laureate Phillip A. Sharp, Ph.D., Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT.

Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah Teitel releases highly anticipated debut studio album, Who Are You Holding, following the success of her uncut, acoustic material this September 2014

Toronto, ON – August 27, 2014

Sarah-Teitel-Album-CoverToronto-based musician and poet Sarah Teitel is releasing her first studio album Who Are You Holding, featuring seven original songs and an interpretation of a traditional Welsh folksong. The album is now available for purchase on iTunes (http://bit.ly/1BexD3C) and from Indie Pool (http://bit.ly/1tpKM4l). Who Are You Holding will be officially launched on Friday, September 26, 2014 at 7:00 PM at Project Gallery (1109 Queen Street East) with an exclusive performance by Sarah and showcase of the paintings and drawings she created for the album. The artwork will be on display in Project Gallery from September 26th until October 1st.

Sonically, Who Are You Holding is a blend of contemporary and traditional influences with incorporated elements of indie-folk, country, classical, Celtic, and African music.

Through music and poetry, Who Are You Holding explores the complex nature of the self. How is it that we can be both generous and treacherous towards ourselves and towards others? In what ways are we are own worst enemies? Where in ourselves can we turn to find comfort? What is self-acceptance? Is it possible to achieve?” Asks Sarah.

Sarah produced Who Are You Holding along with Raffi Altounian, a classical guitarist and instructor at the Royal Conservatory of Music whose work was recently featured in the film Robocop. Altounian also arranged the album which was recorded at the Canterbury Music Company in Toronto, and Jeremy Darby engineered (Sara Bareilles, Serena Ryder).

Sarah has been creating in various mediums for the past decade. An accomplished visual artist, her artwork has been showcased in various exhibitions including Brain Paintings, a solo exhibition at the Hang Man Gallery in 2012. Previously, Sarah has performed all over North America including appearances in Toronto, New York City and Texas. She is thrilled to be able to share Who Are You Holding as it is a work that she feels is reflective of human multiplicity, and her own multiplicity as an artist.

This year’s Stand Up To Cancer roadblock telecast — the fourth since SU2C, the US-based initiative, was founded in 2008 — will feature performances from top recording artists, along with celebrities from film and television, and powerful stories of remarkable progress being made through SU2C-funded research.

This star-studded appeal will continue to build public support to accelerate the pace of groundbreaking translational research that can get new therapies to patients quickly, saving lives and helping more cancer patients become long-term cancer survivors. SU2C brings together scientists from different disciplines across institutions and international boundaries to work collaboratively on promising new treatments that will impact a wide range of cancer types.

The first three SU2C telecasts took place on September 5, 2008, September 10, 2010 and September 7, 2012, and were made available to more than 190 countries. To date, more than $261 million has been pledged to support SU2C’s innovative cancer research programs. Since 2008, the US-based SU2C initiative has funded 12 “Dream Teams” of researchers and two translational research teams, as well as 26 young innovative scientists whose high-risk, potentially high-reward projects are aimed at ending cancer’s reign as a leading cause of death worldwide.

About Stand Up To Cancer

Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) raises funds to accelerate the pace of research to get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives now. SU2C, a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, was established in 2008 by film and media leaders who utilize the industry’s resources to engage the public in supporting a new, collaborative model of cancer research, and to increase awareness about cancer prevention as well as progress being made in the fight against the disease. As SU2C’s scientific partner, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and a Scientific Advisory Committee led by Nobel Laureate Phillip A. Sharp, Ph.D., conduct rigorous, competitive review processes to identify the best research proposals to recommend for funding, oversee grants administration, and provide expert review of research progress.

Current members of the SU2C Council of Founders and Advisors (CFA) include Katie Couric, Sherry Lansing, Kathleen Lobb, Lisa Paulsen, Rusty Robertson, Sue Schwartz, Pamela Oas Williams, and Ellen Ziffren. All current members of the CFA were co-producers of the 2012 televised special. The late co-founder Laura Ziskin executive produced both the Sept. 5, 2008, and Sept. 10, 2010, broadcasts. SU2C was formally launched on May 27, 2008. Sung Poblete, Ph.D., R.N., has served as SU2C’s president and CEO since 2011.

Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Pierce Brosnan, Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, Jon Hamm, Kiefer Sutherland, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Mark Harmon, Rob Lowe, Danny McBride, Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Tony Hale, Marg Helgenberger, Dane Cook, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Matt Passmore, Rob Riggle, Italia Ricci and Bree Turner will appear in the broadcast, with special performances by The Who, Jennifer Hudson, Common & Lupe Fiasco, Ariana Grande, and Dave Matthews. Additional stars and performers will be announced in the coming weeks.

Paltrow and Joel Gallen of Tenth Planet Productions will executive produce the September 5 broadcast, live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. For the first time, there will be a Canada-inclusive co-broadcast of the Stand Up To Cancer special, which will air simultaneously on all four major English-language Canadian networks: CBC, City, CTV and Global, along with Canadian services AMI, CHCH, CHEK, Fight Network, and Hollywood Suite.

Instead of the traditional phone bank staffed by celebrities, the September 5 telecast will feature a “digital lounge” on the set, hosted by Yahoo News Global Anchor Katie Couric. Stars in the digital lounge will reach out to viewers via phone, Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms through an exciting new campaign called “We’re Calling You” that SU2C’s supporters can sign up for, as of today, at werecallingyou.org*.

“Since we started Stand Up To Cancer in 2008, social media has exploded, creating a whole new way to connect,” said Couric, a Co-Founder of the U.S-based Stand Up To Cancer initiative. “So in an unprecedented way, we’ll have plenty of stars reaching out to donors via social media, thanking them through Facebook messages, digital shout outs, Instagrams and tweets. In other words, this year, we are so 2014!”

There have been three previous Stand Up To Cancer roadblock fundraising specials, which aired on dozens of U.S. broadcast and cable networks. Facebook has collaborated with the U.S.-based Stand Up To Cancer program since the first telecast in 2008 and is now SU2C’s primary social media partner. With the “We’re Calling You” activation, Facebook and Instagram will enable supporters and fans in Canada as well as the U.S. to engage directly with their favorite stars. See more at werecallingyou.org.

In the on-stage digital lounge, Katie Couric will tap into the Facebook Mentions Box, which allows supporters to share their connection to cancer and receive real-time responses from celebrities. Other celebrities in the digital lounge will participate in Facebook Q&As, using their own pages to respond live to fan questions. Facebook and Instagram will also have a presence on the star-studded red carpet on Sept. 5 with a photo experience that will capture the stars as they make their way into the Dolby Theatre, sharing those images and videos with fans. All of this, and much more, can be followed on Stand Up To Cancer Canada’s social media feeds (Facebook: Stand Up To Cancer Canada | Instagram: @SU2C_CA | Twitter: @SU2C_CA).

In addition to Facebook, an array of digital and social media platforms and influencers — ranging from reddit, Nerdist, Tumblr, Yahoo, AOL, and Huffington Post are supporting the SU2C telecast this year.

“Cancer affects us all,” said Paltrow, who lost her father, Bruce Paltrow, to oral cancer in 2002, “and each and every person can help the scientists who are working 24/7 to save more lives. We want to get that message out in as many ways as possible, so we’re excited to use social media to reach supporters from all over who are helping to grow the Stand Up To Cancer movement, and hopefully, get even more people to stand up with us.”

This star-studded appeal will help build public support for SU2C Canada, which will bring together scientists from different disciplines and across institutions to collaborate on finding new treatments for a wide range of cancer types. All funds received from the Canadian general public during the broadcast will be directed towards the creation of collaborative research teams, as well as education and awareness programs conducted in Canada.

“It is such an honor to be part of this extraordinary event and movement. Everyone is joining together: the artists are volunteering their talents, the broadcast and cable networks are giving us the time, and the great online community is helping us reach millions of people. It is a powerful and hopeful moment to see so many stand united to turn every cancer patient into a survivor,” said Gallen.

Organizations collaborating with the SU2C Canada initiative include the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, with funding from CIBC; the Canadian Cancer Society; the Cancer Stem Cell Consortium, with funding from Genome Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research; the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). MasterCard and AstraZeneca are the first Canadian corporate supporters of SU2C Canada.

The first three SU2C telecasts took place in 2008, 2010 and 2012 under the aegis of the U.S.-based SU2C program, part of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), a U.S. 501(c)(3) charitable organization, which utilizes the industry’s resources to engage the public in supporting a new, collaborative model of cancer research, and to increase awareness about progress being made in the fight against the disease. To date, more than $260 million has been pledged to the U.S.-based SU2C program.

In the U.S., ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC, along with ABC Family, American Forces Network, Bravo, Cooking Channel, Discovery Fit & Health, E!, Encore, Encore Espanol, EPIX, ESPNEWS, FOX Sports 2, FXM, HBO, HBO Latino, ION Television, LMN, Logo TV, MLB Network, National Geographic Channel, Oxygen, Palladia, Pivot, SHOWTIME, Smithsonian Channel, Starz, TNT and VH1 are donating one hour of simultaneous commercial-free primetime for the nationally televised fundraising special on Friday, September 5.
