Ottawa’s Brothers Dubé to busk at Toronto’s First Canadian Place on Friday, June 14, 2013

Toronto – June 14, 2013
Bro-Dube1Ottawa’s youngest rock band the Brothers Dubé are set to perform two busking sessions at the First Canadian Place (100 King St W) on Friday, June 14, 2013. The two electric half hour performances will be taking place at 12: 15 PM and 1:15 PM.

Seeing over 80,000 people a day in Toronto’s busy downtown core, the First Canadian Place Arts & Events is committed to providing free arts programs to enrich the cultural lives of those who work and live nearby the centre.

Upcoming, the Brothers Dubé will be warming up the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) stage for the world’s most iconic summertime band, The Beach Boys from August 18, 2013.

The Beach Boys, known for their culture of surfing, cars, and romance have been regarded as one of America’s greatest rock bands of all time. During their 50 year career, they have earned a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award.

Now in its 135th year, the CNE is a rich part of Toronto’s history and runs from August 16 – September 2, 2013. The CNE features attractions like the fairway, horseshows, unique food, air shows and more.

Fans can expect new material written and recorded over the last year in Nashville and Ottawa, adding an acoustic element to their hard electric sound.

The Brothers Dubé is one of the youngest professional alternative three piece rock bands in the world. In the last three years, they have been working with Grammy-Nominated producer Randall Prescott and Kaylen Prescott, developing their visceral sound and delivery of classic rock anthems

The brothers got their start in music in 2006 at the ages of 6, 8, and 10 in their hometown of Ottawa, Canada after posting covers of their mother’s favourite songs on YouTube to keep her spirits up while she fought cancer. Shortly after her death in 2008, they started drawing crowds of thousands at a time to their mega-busking and guerilla street performances on what eventually became known as their Sidewalk Stage. Many recognize them as the “Bluesfest Buskers” who were joined by Arcade Fire in 2010 while they were raising money for Haiti. Arcade Fire, who also raise money for Haiti, were headlining at Bluesfest in Ottawa at the time when they walked off their stage, over the security fence, to join the brothers in an improve session singing backup for them. The boys joined forces with Arcade Fire supporting their Haiti mission by matching every dollar they raised.

Through these now legendary street performances, the Brothers Dubé have played hundreds of shows a year in support of numerous charities. They have raised over $150,000 for various causes close to their heart, primarily for orphans in Haiti. In March 2012, they visited Haiti to film a documentary called A Day in the Life, which tells the story of what everyday life is like for an orphaned Haitian child. The Brothers created the film because they wanted to raise awareness in schools everywhere through a musical multi-media performance.

The brothers have received numerous awards for their social activism including United Way’s Community Builder of the Year Award 2011; the Heart of Gold Award, a commendation from the Prime Minister of Canada, and a nomination for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Governor General’s Award.

As accredited songwriters with an album under their belt, the Brothers Dubé have played at some of North America’s largest music festivals including Bluesfest, Osheaga, and the Montreal Pop Festival. In addition to this, they also have published works within the music and television industries including a soundtrack spot on the hit television show, Degrassi.

Most recently, the Brothers have officially signed with one of the entertainment world’s premiere music management groups, the Feldman Agency. With over 40 years in the entertainment business, and a wealth of experience when it comes to artist representation, talent booking, event services, and corporate consulting, The Feldman Agency represents world-renowned artists including RUSH, Michael Bublé, Bryan Adams, the Tragically Hip, Our Lady Peace, Sloan, Simple Plan, and Tom Cochrane, just to name a few.

Upcoming, the brothers will be returning to Nashville to continue writing and recording at the legendary Ocean Way Studios which boasts a slew of legendary clientele including Matchbox Twenty, Harry Connick Jr., Faith Hill, The Mavericks, Kings of Leon, and Willie Nelson. The boys will also be showcasing there and working with performance coach Tom Jackson who has worked with music legends Taylor Swift, and The Band Perry.

Award-winning jazz vocalist Molly Johnson to perform at the 2013 TD Toronto Jazz Festival

Toronto – June 14 , 2013
MollyJohnson1-250x300Award-winning jazz vocalist Molly Johnson, known as one of Canada’s greatest voices, is performing at the 2013 TD Toronto Jazz Festival on Friday, June 21, 2013 and Saturday, June 22, 2013 at the Jazz Bistro (251 Victoria St.).

Performing with special guest Colleen Allen, the Friday performances are free of charge and will take place at 8 PM and 10:30 PM; the Saturday performances at 8 PM and 10:30 PM are $35.60 per ticket. Tickets can be purchased at www.torontojazz.com.

Running from June 20-29, 2013 at venues across the city, the TD Toronto Jazz Festival is one of North America’s premier jazz festivals. Featuring over 350 performances and 1,500 musicians, the festival has become a destination event, not just for music lovers but for some of the greatest jazz celebrities in the world.

Molly is a mother, singer-songwriter, artist and philanthropist who has grown to become a Canadian icon that has made her mark on the worldwide jazz scene.

Molly’s story starts in the mid-sixties when as a young grade schooler, she and her brother, Clark Johnson, were tapped by legendary Toronto producer Ed Mirvish to appear in Porgy and Bess at the Royal Alex Theatre. In time Porgy and Bess was followed by South Pacific, Finian’s Rainbow and other now-classic musicals. The budding child star was soon enrolled in the National Ballet School as she desired to become a choreographer. Molly was taken with the idea of writing songs and the future chanteuse began to think of herself as a potential songwriter.

Since then, Molly has performed throughout Canada, the United States, and France and has performed alongside world renowned artists including Tom Cochrane, Celine Dion, Blue Rodeo, Anne Murray, and more.

Molly has also performed for the world’s most renowned icons like Prince and late Princess of Wales on the Royal Yacht Britannia, as well as Nelson Mandela and Quincy Jones.

Making a mark on history, Molly was the first Canadian female vocalist in the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival’s 17-year-history to sell out a show on the mainstage.

In 2009, Molly won a Juno Award for Best Vocal Jazz Album for her fourth full-length, career milestone album Lucky and also received the 2009 National Jazz Award for Best Female Vocalist. Her voice evokes the aura of dark, smoky night clubs of a bygone era. It speaks to an emotional depth that few vocalists in any genre ever reach. Molly has rocked standing-room only audiences in nightclubs and bars from coast-to-coast, seducing salon and lounge patrons with her luscious interpretations of jazz and blues standards.

Dedicated to supporting those in need, in 1992 Molly established the Kumbaya Foundation and Festival, raising awareness and funds for people living with HIV/AIDS, and she continues to work with countless other charitable organizations every year. Molly has been awarded the Queen’s Jubilee medal, and in 2008, was honoured with becoming an Officer of The Order Of Canada. This rare distinction was given to Molly to recognize her philanthropic work for a variety of causes and for her international contributions to the arts.

Currently, Molly is also the voice of the CBC Radio 2 Weekend Morning program where she eases listeners into their weekend with great Canadian songs and stories about musicians and the people of Canada, from coast to coast to coast.

Producer Kelly Slattery of Therapy Content brings the Terry Fox story to film with 100 percent of profits being donated to cancer research

Toronto – April 11, 2013
TerryFox-270x400Producer Kelly Slattery of Therapy Content, in co-operation with the family of Terry Fox and The Terry Fox Foundation (TFF) announce film development rights have been secured for TERRY FOX: THE FEATURE FILM. The film tells the story of 21-year-old amputee Terry Fox, whose cross-Canadian marathon on an artificial leg to raise money for cancer research made him a national hero. This will be the first feature film to donate 100 percent of the profits to cancer research.

Thirty-three years ago, on April 12, 1980, Terry Fox dipped his artificial foot into the Atlantic Ocean off St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, beginning his journey across Canada. His “Marathon of Hope,” a 3,339 mile run, for 143 days, is a heroic feat of athleticism. Just three years earlier, Terry Fox was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer. Following the standard of care for that time, Terry’s right leg was amputated 15 centimeters above his right knee. Before his surgery, Terry read about an amputee who had run the famous New York Marathon and was inspired to embark on his own journey to provide hope and a better chance of survival for millions suffering from cancer.

It was then I decided to meet this new challenge head on and not only overcome my disability, but conquer it in such a way that I could never look back and say it disabled me.” – Terry Fox

Terry Fox won the hearts of a country and raised millions for cancer research but sadly, after 143 days the marathon came to an abrupt halt. Terry’s cancer had spread to his lungs and he was forced to stop. Terry Fox passed away on June 28, 1981 but his legacy lives on. Through the TFF, the annual Terry Fox “Marathon of Hope” is run across Canada and in 30 countries worldwide, raising over $600-million to date for cancer research.

Kelly Slattery, Therapy Content Producer and a Toronto native, continues Terry’s legacy of hope by bringing the Terry Fox story to film. Slattery’s vision is to use this powerful medium to bring the voice of Terry Fox to global audiences and to donate the film’s profits to cancer research; by purchasing a ticket, audiences can help support cancer research. Film profits will go directly to cancer research managed by the Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI).

“We are excited by the opportunities offered in a theatre release to share Terry’s vision and values with a global audience,” says Darrell Fox, brother of Terry and a Marathon of Hope member. “We are very thankful for Kelly’s intentions of generating revenue for cancer research, which go hand and hand with Terry’s Marathon of Hope intentions of reducing the suffering caused by cancer.”

For Slattery, TERRY FOX: THE FEATURE FILM is the realization of a lifelong dream. Her father, an Adidas executive, was the recipient of the letter Terry wrote to secure running shoes. Slattery says, “Terry Fox was a religion in our home; he represented a selflessness rarely seen in the world today.” Slattery helms the non-profit effort, assembling a board of who share the same heart-path including notable individuals in medicine, science, technology, entertainment and professional sports—all of whom have been touched in some way, by cancer.

Producer Kelly Slattery, with Therapy Content and in co-operation with the Terry Fox Foundation, admirably responds to Terry’s plea, “Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.” The feature film is currently in development and is intended for initial release in December 2014.

“In addition to telling Terry’s story, what excites me most about this project is that it will be the first feature film where all of the profits will go directly to cancer research. Terry’s journey has already affected the lives of millions of cancer victims; through this film, it will continue to affect—and save—countless more.” – Producer Kelly Slattery.

About Therapy Content:

with The Terry Fox Foundation being created in 1988. Its national headquarters are located in Chilliwack, BC and it has offices in 9 provinces. www.terryfox.org

Warner Bros. Pictures shares the story of baseball legend Jackie Robinson. “42” opens in theatres this Friday, April 12, 2013.

Toronto – April 9, 2013

42PicWarner Bros. Pictures
shares the story of baseball legend Jackie Robinson. “42” opens in theatres this Friday, April 12, 2013.

Hero is a word often heard in sports, but heroism is not always about achievements on the field of play. 42 tells the story of two men—the great Jackie Robinson and trailblazing Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickey—whose brave stand against prejudice forever changed the world by changing the game of baseball. 42 has been rated PG-13 for thematic elements including language.

After seeing this biopic at a White House screening, First Lady Michelle Obama supports 42 saying, “We think that everybody in this country needs to watch this movie. We walked away from that just visibly, physically moved by the experience of the movie, of the story.” Michelle continues, “It was the raw emotion that it just makes you feel after the experience…. You’re left just asking yourselves, how on Earth did they live through that? How did they do it? How did they endure the taunts and the bigotry for all of that time?”

From Academy Award® winner Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential) comes the real-life drama 42, starring Chadwick Boseman (The Express) as Jackie Robinson and Oscar® nominee Harrison Ford (Witness) as Branch Rickey.

In 1947, Branch Rickey put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking Major League Baseball’s infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and other players.

Facing blatant racism from every side, even his own team, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey’s hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the talking—ultimately winning over fans and his teammates, silencing his critics, and paving the way for others to follow.

In 1997, Major League Baseball retired the number 42 for all teams, making it the first number in sports to be universally retired. The only exception is every year on April 15th—Jackie Robinson Day—commemorating the date of his first game as a Brooklyn Dodger. On that day alone, players from every team proudly wear the number 42 to honor the man who altered the course of history. The film opens in theatres on time to commemorate this day.

Rounding out the main cast of 42 are: Nicole Beharie as Rachel Robinson; Christopher Meloni as Leo Durocher; Andre Holland as Wendell Smith; Lucas Black as Pee Wee Reese; Hamish Linklater as Ralph Branca; and Ryan Merriman as Dixie Walker.

Written and directed by Brian Helgeland, 42 is produced by Thomas Tull, with Dick Cook, Jon Jashni, and Jason Clark serving as executive producers, and Darryl Pryor and Jillian Zaks co-producing.

Helgeland’s behind-the-scenes collaborators included Oscar®-nominated director of photography Don Burgess (“Forrest Gump”), production designer Richard Hoover, costume designer Caroline Harris, and editors Kevin Stitt and Peter McNulty. The music is composed by Oscar® nominee Mark Isham (“A River Runs Through It”).
