Multiculturalism in Hockey

soul on ice poster1Hockey. It’s Canada’s game. Just like our country, our sport has welcomed everyone from all backgrounds to play, but it hasn’t always been that way.

In 1895, the first black hockey league was created as an initiative of the black Baptist Churches of Canada. Named “the Coloured Hockey League of the Maritimes”, the league was an all-black, up to 12 team league with over 400 African Canadian players from across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. The league existed until 1930.

It wasn’t until 1958 that the NHL saw the first black professional hockey player hit the ice. Willie O’Ree played for the Boston Bruins as a winger. Being the first black hockey player in the big leagues, he dealt with powerful racist remarks from fans in the U.S. and Canada, but that didn’t stop him from playing the sport he loved. His courage and perseverance painted the way for black hockey legends like Grant Fuhr, Val James, Georges Laraque and many more. They all had to deal with set backs, struggles and hardships all because of their race.

Today some of the NHL’s brightest and most influential players are from many different backgrounds. From Jordin Tootoo, the first Inuk professional hockey player to Devin Setoguchi, a fourth generation Japanese hockey player currently with the Minnesota Wild. Everyone has a place in hockey. With NHL players like P.K. Subban not only helping Team Canada win gold in the 2014 Sochi Olympics but also making a $10 million dollar donation to the Montreal Children’s Hospital, becoming the first Canadian sports figure to make a philanthropic contribution of that size in history.

The new documentary feature film, Soul On Ice: Past, Present & Future looks at the history of black athletes in hockey and redefines what it means to be black in the world of hockey. Writer, director and producer Kwame Damon Mason follows the journey of Jaden Lindo, a young, black, NHL hopeful who sees the difficulties that still face black athletes in the game of hockey today.

Soul On Ice won People’s Choice for Best Feature at the Edmonton International Film Fest showing that telling the often difficult story of black athletes in hockey is one that more people want to hear and need to hear.

Soul On Ice: Past, Present & Future has it’s public screening in Toronto Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at Rainbow Cinemas – Market Square at 80 Front Street East.

Art With Heart

Overview

Pennant Media Group was hired by Toronto’s Casey House to publicize its most significant fundraiser in 2014 and 2015. Art With Heart is an annual charity contemporary art auction held by Casey House to raise essential funds for the organization’s yearly HIV/AIDS-related initiatives. A curatorial committee of prominent artists, curators and art collectors select works by emerging and established Canadian artists with the generous support of galleries across the country.

Funds raised at this annual auction featuring some of the country’s most celebrated as well as emerging artists will benefit a number of Casey House’s initiatives including sending skilled teams of registered nurses and workers into clients’ homes, providing rehabilitative care and recreation therapy at the hospice, and bringing specialized HIV nursing care via partner clinics to marginalized people who lack access to treatment.

PMG’s Approach

With the auction in its 22nd year, Art With Heart’s challenge was to remind its audience why this fundraiser is important and why they should continue to support this cause. While PMG continued to push the message that the funds raised at this auction would benefit Casey House’s HIV/AIDS-related initiatives, we also focused on the art that was featured in the auction. We emphasized Casey House’s support for both established and emerging Canadian artists and its continued support for local artists throughout the years.

PMG reached out to both traditional and non-traditional outlets to raise public awareness of Art With Heart. We pitched to newspapers, online news outlets, bloggers, influencers and more to get the word out on the annual auction and its preview the week prior.

Results

PMG secured coverage from outlets such as AZNModern, TUSSLE Magazine, Studio Beat, Toronto Guardian and PositiveLite.com. Art blog The Jealous Curator featured Art With Heart as an event for art lovers to look out for. PMG also coordinated an interview between blogger David McDonough and featured artist Kim Dorland, whose piece alone contributed $23,000 to the total funds raised during the Art With Heart auction in 2015. Media that attended the auction include representatives from Huffington Post Canada, Artoronto.ca, Best of Toronto and Snapd.

Social media vocal network Beep announces partnerships with innovative tech firms Crowdfunder, MiiScan and Personas to further new app developments

Client-BeepAfter its successful launch in October 2014, social media vocal network Beep has partnered with capital-raising network Crowdfunder (www.crowdfunder.com/beep), mobile engagement platform MiiScan and entertainment social network Personas to further new app developments.

Crowdfunder was founded in 2011 and is now the leading equity funding platform with the mission of bringing capital to early-stage companies like Beep while giving investors access to top deal-flow. Since 2011, the company has engaged with the United States Congress and White House on crowdfunding legislation and regulations. Crowdfunder is also well known for partnering with NBA player Yao Ming for his Yao Family Wines campaign.

“Crowdfunder is a great vehicle for companies like Beep to tell their story and connect with an existing network of over 10,000 accredited individual and institutional investors online,” said Chance Barnett, CEO of Crowdfunder.  “We are excited to be a part of this journey with Beep and we look forward to what is in store next for them.”

Beep has also joined forces with MiiScan, which allows for mobile engagement platform that allows consumers to interact with media anywhere, as well as Personas, the world’s first free entertainment social network.

Beep is proud to be working with such great partners. Our friends at Personas, MiiScan and Crowdfunder, are creating entirely new ways of doing business and Beep is pleased to be leading the charge along side them,” said Beep partner Ben Cantin-Kranz. “Our team is developing new ways for everyone to connect with friends, family, and celebrities on smart watches and phones. We’re also excited to be redefining how brands will connect with fans. The future is bright for Beep.”

Since its official launch in October 2014, Beep has reached over 50 million people near and far, from the United States to the Philippines. Thanks to its new partnerships with Crowdfunder and other successful companies like MiiScan and Personas, Beep is expecting to create innovative updates for its app and increase its user base significantly. Beep looks to position itself as a new and more personal social app that could bring its users closer together.

“I was drawn to Beep because it brings the personal, human element to social media,” says Jesse DeCosta of DECOSTA Marketing Inc., Canada’s leading branding manager to Hollywood stars and now Beep’s CEO. “It’s common to send a line of text to a loved one or read about a celebrity in a magazine, but to instantly connect and hear that person’s voice on-the-fly will change everything we know. It’s the audio version of Twitter, and the entertainment industry is catching on quick.”

Beep stands out as the social voice app leader thanks to users like Hollywood actor Will Smith. Will Smith chose Beep to personally thank millions of fans for their birthday wishes, and most recently communicating with fans in several different languages.

Beep allows its users to record short voice messages called beeps which can then be sent to a friend, shared openly with the world, or posted on other social networks like Facebook.

Available on the App Store and Play Store, Beep is continuing to grow in popularity. With additional major updates being unveiled, Beep will continue to gain the attention of celebrities and every day social media users alike.

Toronto’s Casey House raises over $575,000 at Art With Heart, its annual contemporary art auction and reception held on October 6, 2015, raising essential funds so that it can provide inspired HIV/AIDS care

awh-logo2Toronto’s Casey House with presenting sponsor TD Bank Group hosted Art With Heart, its 22nd annual contemporary art auction and reception on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at The Carlu. The gala raised over $575,000, bringing the total funds raised since the inception of the auction to over $6.7 million for the organization’s yearly HIV/AIDS related initiatives.

Donor generosity enables additional services at Casey House to address the complex health needs and isolation that many clients experience.

Art With Heart is Casey House’s biggest single fundraiser each year. We are incredibly excited to have it back once again with even more remarkable art for art collectors and art lovers alike.” says Steven Endicott, Chief Development Officer, Casey House. “With the number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Toronto alone increasing, Casey House is enormously grateful for the funds that have been raised each year to allow it to continue providing inspired HIV/AIDS care for those who need it most.”

This year’s Art With Heart featured Gallery of Patrons Limited Edition work by notable Canadian artist Mark Clintberg. Sponsored by Urbacon, Mark’s piece Our Arrangement depicts two figures that resemble anchors. Their proximity and quantity are used to represent a series of arrangements or agreements between two or more parties. In this case, the piece will signify two agreements: one between the artist and the purchaser and the other between the artist and Casey House. Priced at $1,275 each, Our Arrangement was available to the public for purchase in 25 colour variants, all of which were sold by the end of the event.

Art With Heart has consistently promoted excellence in Canadian contemporary art. A curatorial committee of prominent artists, curators and art collectors select works by emerging and established Canadian artists with the generous support of galleries across the country. Over 80 artists were featured in this year’s auction, including Douglas Coupland and Kim Dorland, whose work was sold for $23,000.

A Conversation with Dan Schneider: Artist and PR Extraordinaire

image1 (1)The latest art piece in PMG’s collection was added by one of our very own alumnus, Dan Schneider. Dan has been an integral part of the PMG team, contributing to several of our projects and operations for over eight years. When he’s not working his PR magic or teaching the ins and outs of the industry to his college PR class (he’s a busy guy!), Dan can be found in his home studio crafting unique pieces of art. He holds a master’s degree in fine art from the University of Guelph and has an impressive exhibition record. Dan’s work has been featured on episodes of Designer Guys and Cityline, issues of Canadian House and Home and Style at Home magazines, as well as Danny Fernandes’ music video, Fantasy. The Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto, the Soho Metropolitan and the penthouse at the Cosmopolitan in New York also currently hang some of Dan’s works on paper. We sat down with Dan to ask him more about his background in art and relationship with PMGL, the impressive sculpture he gifted our office with and the inspiration behind it.

Tell us a little bit about your history at PMGL.

I came to PMGL when the company was still in its infancy, maybe one or two years after it was founded. I started off as a contract person, I was brought in to help on special projects but that turned into full-time work pretty quickly because the company got really busy. In 2010, I started balancing my time between teaching and working at PMGL. I really love teaching and have always had a yearning to do it so when I got an opportunity to teach I moved more towards that. Now I come on as extra hands when there’s a special project going on at PMGL, like the Toronto Film Festival, for example.

Where would you say art falls for you? Would you consider it a hobby?

Art is another thing I balance in my life. Sometimes it takes a heavy priority, sometimes it takes less. I wouldn’t call it a hobby; I would call it enjoyable work because there are deadlines that I need to meet for the art galleries I work with. For me, I think I would call sailing a hobby.

What kind of art do you specialize in?

I do wood sculptures but my chandelier drawings are probably what people know me most for.

Take us through the creation process of a wood sculpture.

It’s really labour intensive. I’ll have an idea and draw it out first to work out the details. Then I go get my wood, which is an awesome part in the process, and bring it home. I make markings on the wood and do more prep work. I usually don’t talk about how the rest happens because once people know how it happens it looses its mystique. When people don’t know exactly how the sculpture came to be then they can come up with their own ideas and visualize the artist putting it together.

What’s the inspiration behind your wood sculptures?

I’m really interested in the hourglass form that the sculptures have; it reminds me of a tree. The piece of wood I’m working on was a tree at one time and in my own kind of way I’m putting it back into a tree.

How much time does it take you to complete a wood sculpture?

They’re done rather quickly. I would say about ten hours of physical labour and then I do touch ups which also take time. When you look at the sculpture from a distance it has a really simple form and there are not a lot of crazy edges. It looks really clean from far but when you look at the surface you start to see that there’s a lot of work that’s put into it.

Where can people go to find out more about your work? Is your art available for purchase?

People can visit my website, www.danielschneider.ca. My work can also be found at the two galleries I work with, Parts Gallery and Art Interiors.

If you have a passion for art like Dan and love giving back to the community Toronto’s Casey House hosts the  22nd annual Art With Heart charity auction at The Carlu on October 6, 2015.

ULabs introduces two-day, hands-on intensive flagship workshop ‘[U]Lab’ to Canada enabling youth to unearth their natural innate talents and skills this November 14-15, 2015

Kim Klingler, co-founder and forme1307929970_origr board member and executive director of the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, introduces ULabs to Canada, a series of experiential workshops that gets kids off their phones and into designing their lives through the development of real world skills. The flagship hands-on, intensive [U]Lab is officially launching its mission to develop the self-mastery parents are desperate for, colleges are screening for, and employees are now demanding. The event will take place in Toronto from November 14 to 15, 2015 at CJ Skateboard Park and School (60 Horner Ave, Etobicoke).

[U]Lab is an introductory lab and is the most in-demand workshop ULabs offers. Through [U]Lab, participants will become aware of their passions through discovering what matters to them and unearthing their natural, innate talents and skills. The series of labs engage youth through themes they are genuinely interested in and “sneak” in core concepts of self and skills development. Participants will learn practical, real world skills while also further developing their confidence, communication, strategic thinking and self-value.

The cost of the two day flagship event [U]Lab is $175 and registration is now open at www.labs4youth.com.

An Indiegogo campaign has also been launched to further the engagement of business leaders, teachers and parents to participate in [U]Labs‘ mission to re-design education. Contributors can claim perks such as designing and developing their own Lab, tickets to ULabs‘ Highly Rebellious Think Tank and sponsoring an entire class to attend the November workshop. Passionate educators, parents, students and business leaders can get involved by checking out the ULabs Indiegogo site: http://bit.ly/1L200Vh

[U]Lab aims for participants to work collaboratively and learn introductory skills in project ideation, project development and project management. Participants should come out of the two-day lab with the skills to turn ideas into reality. Skills that participants will work on improving include communication, leadership, team management, personal organization and self-regulation.

The first day of the [U]Lab will focus on participants identifying their passions. They will be able to delve into what matters to them and what thrills them. Participants will discover their individual talents and their unique value which will be presented within a values-based resume. The second day is dedicated to project idea development. Participants will learn visual thought process analysis tools such as mind-mapping and sculpting critical thinking skills. They will be able to turn ideas into reality. [U]Lab gets kids off their phones and into designing their lives.

“Today’s youth are eager to try and do. They are bright, advanced, highly creative and are desperate to try things, to experience, to ‘do,’” says Kim Klingler, Founder, ULabs. “This desire to try, to experience and ‘do’ is an integral part of youth development. However, the landscape of what is available to them has not evolved to meet their desire to do purposeful things. They want to build, design and shape just like adults do. “Doing” is how we practice “who” we are, and U Labs provides youth with a variety of career skills sets and themes to “do” just that.”

ULabs provides youth with an opportunity to try multiple skill sets applicable to diverse future careers, enabling them to discover their passions, talents and potential purpose. ULabs offers 11 labs in addition to its flagship [U]Lab: Make[U]P, [U]Snap, Build[U], Inc[U]bate, Improv[U], [U]Focus, [U]Friends, [U]Nail.IT, Defend[U], [U]Survive and [U]HairDo. ULabs provides an opportunity for youth to practice being who they are in real world scenarios that typical academic experiences fail to provide.

About [U]LABS

Fueled by her deeply rooted passion for youth, Kim Klingler founded ULabs, a series of developmental workshops that offer experiential scenarios that develop real world skills by enabling youth to navigate who they are, understand their innate talents and how to effectively combine these tools to create a successful life. ULabs takes learning out of traditional classroom settings, Ubering education and enabling youth to build individual development skills. Labs are designed based on individual interests so that fundamental learning principles can be digested without resistance or boredom. All instructors at ULabs are industry specialists within their field and skills learned can immediately be applicable to youth’s lives.

White isn’t just for Summer

Screen Shot 2015-09-17 at 11.45.10 AMThe saying goes that you’re not supposed to wear white after Labour Day, yet Labour Day is not the official end of summer. The hot summer weather hasn’t quite left and with the current heat wave in parts of the country, white should still be a staple in your wardrobe.

White is synonymous with clean, fresh and cool perfect for those sticky hot days. Everything from a simple white boyfriend tee to crisp white skinny jeans paired with your favourite Chuck Taylors, white should be a staple in everyone’s wardrobe, summer or otherwise.

Maybe you’re looking for a more fashionable way to wear white, after all the Toronto Film Festival is going on until September 20. Look no further than the luxurious, lightweight and chic look of linen.

Comfortable yet beautiful, linen clothing is the perfect way to look red carpet ready and also be comfortable in the heat of summer. It perfectly drapes across your body, giving you a simple and refined shape.

Toronto based brand Whitney Linen makes linen clothing for all your occasions, from couture to weekend getaway, there’s a linen look for every occasion.

Whitney Linen, founded by Whitney Westwood and designer Franciska Veress in 2011, is well-known for taking an innovative approach to linen, tailoring bold shapes and textures using techniques that are unique and edgy, and putting a stamp of great sophistication to each piece designed.

Pieces range from crisp, white tailored shirts to elegant, colourful dresses and skirts. Designing high-end pieces for both men and women, linen is a classic and polished ay to proudly wear white after Labour Day.

Give linen a try and wear your whitest whites and look red carpet ready. It’s no coincidence TIFF ends just before the first official day of fall.

Whitney Linen will be launching their Spring/Summer 2016 line September 17, 2016.

Toronto’s Casey House and The Rekai Centres launch a brand new educational video series to end and address the stigma associated with providing compassionate care needs for people living with HIV/AIDS

TitleScreenPhoto1HIV/AIDS specialty hospital Casey House has partnered with long-term care home provider, The Rekai Centres, to launch a brand new video series titled Compassionate Care in a Changing Landscape: HIV/AIDS and Long Term Care.  The eight-part educational series focuses on bringing awareness and increasing sensitivity to the ever-changing compassionate care needs of people living with HIV/AIDS.

With generous contributions from the M.A.C. AIDS Fund, Casey House and The Rekai Centres have produced the video series, designed to assist anyone working in a long-term care setting. Through identifying the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS and understanding the principles of empathetic care, frontline staff will have the awareness and tools required to build a compassionate and comprehensive person-centred approach. By including the voice of the clients, the series aims to increase empathy and improves care provider confidence and health care delivery. These training videos have been found to be useful for education at hospitals, AIDS Service Organizations and academic settings for health care professionals in training.

Topics covered include an introduction to HIV, reviewing safety for clients and care providers; cognitive changes, an exploration of health concerns that can emerge with age and how they affect people living longer with HIV; families and networks of support, an overview of families navigating the health care system; mental health and HIV care, stories of people living with HIV and their journeys with mental health and illness; pharmacology and HIV, an overview of the history and current state of anti-retro viral medications and treatment; substance use and HIV care, the personal stories and wisdom on living with substances, harm reduction and recovery; and complex care and HIV which highlights the concurrent diagnosis that people living with HIV often encounter and holistic care approaches that consider the individual and their life circumstances.

In Toronto, one in every 120 adults is HIV positive and in Ontario well over 7,000 people over the age of 50 are living with HIV/AIDS. With longer life expectancy and the potential complexities of care that can arise, Casey House provides sub-acute hospital care for these individuals.  As people living with HIV require additional resources long-term care homes, like The Rekai Centres, are admitting more clients. The video series will support staff to provide ongoing compassionate care.

“HIV positive clients have faced stigma and discrimination throughout their lives and care experiences,” says Karen de Prinse, Director of Clinical Programs, Casey House. “The videos are an educational tool available free to those practicing in care environments or learning to do so, with a goal to introduce the clinical issues impacting an HIV positive client to the care team in a long term care environment.”

The Rekai Centres have a reputation for recognizing the changing needs of the residents of Toronto.  We were the first to embrace multiculturalism in healthcare hiring individuals who could communicate with the changing makeup of the residents of Toronto.” says Sue Graham-Nutter, Executive Director, The Rekai Centre at Wellesley Central Place. “When we noticed a number of inquiries from individuals living with HIV/AIDS, we sought the expertise available at Casey House.  We are pleased to partner with Casey House in providing educational videos so that all staff in long term care homes in Ontario can properly meet the needs of incoming residents living with HIV/AIDS.”

The videos are available to stream at http://www.hivlongtermcare.com.

New documentary film ‘Soul On Ice: Past, Present & Future’ to premiere in Toronto this Fall 2015 showcasing the importance of black history in hockey

SOI Poster hi res with creditsNew documentary film Soul on Ice: Past Present & Future will be premiering in Toronto Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 7:00 PM at Rainbow Cinemas Market Square (80 Front Street East). Directed and produced by Toronto’s Kwame Damon Mason and Michael P. Douglas and written by Kwame Damon Mason, the film focuses on how black athletes are making a name for themselves in the sport of hockey. The film has also been selected as part of the Edmonton International Film Festival, with a screening date of October 7, 2015.

Taking over two years to complete, Soul on Ice: Past Present & Future looks at past, present and future black hockey players in all levels of hockey from the minor leagues to the majors. With their numbers on the rise, the film focuses on how the history of black athletes in hockey has influenced and encouraged more youth and their families to put their children into programs, regardless of race.

Hockey has a long-standing history of great men doing great things but it also has a history hardly spoken of,“ said Kwame Damon Mason, producer, director and writer of Soul on Ice: Past Present & Future. “This film is the story of some great athletes from the past and present who have changed the face of the game called hockey.”

The film introduces us to Brampton’s Jaden Lindo, a young black athlete looking to get drafted in the 2014 NHL Draft. The audience follows Jaden and his parents through the season, seeing the stress and pressure he has to go through to achieve his goal.

Soul on Ice: Past Present & Future includes appearances from hockey legend Don Cherry as well as influential players such as Grant Fuhr who was the first black athlete to win a Stanley Cup and get inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as well as Wayne Simmonds, Devonte Smith-Pelly, and Trevor Daley to name a few.  These men talk about their experience of hardship and accomplishments that currently exist for black athletes in hockey today.

About Kwame Damon Mason

Kwame Damon Mason has been working in the Canadian entertainment industry since 1996.  Kwame got his name out there thanks to popular radio stations like KISS 92.5 in Toronto where he co-hosted 2 hour hip hop and R&B mix show Da Vibe with DJ Short. In February 2001 Kwame became the weekend announcer on Toronto’s first urban radio station FLOW 93.5. He eventually went on to work for the morning show and became the Saturday night live-to-air announcer.

In addition to hosting, Kwame used his experience and expertise to help launch countless radio stations across Canada and has co-hosted with some of Canada’s most well-known DJs and stars like former NHL tough guy George Laraque.

Not afraid of being in front of an audience, Kwame has made appearances on popular sports shows like Off the Record and was named number 23 on Cabbie’s (Cabbie on the Street, The Score) Top Canadians. His philosophy is summed up like this “There’s nothing to it but to do it, let’s keep it moving.”
