The world’s first total body indoor surf trainer SURFSET® Fitness launches in Toronto this December

SurfsetToronto

SURFSET® is launching its first GTA location, SURFSET® Toronto (2481A Yonge Street) in the energetic mid-town neighbourhood of Yonge and Eglinton this December 1, 2014, offering members a new way to shake up their daily fitness routine.

SURFSET® is an exciting on-board workout aimed at challenging the body by moving away from traditional static exercise and offering classes designed to sculpt muscles similar to a surfer’s long and lean physique. The instability of the SURFSET® board improves athleticism by constantly engaging core muscles, causing them to react to a dynamically shifting platform. Designed to simulate the physical demands of surfing, the 35 pound adjustable SURFSET® board mimics the instability of water and allows all participants a thrilling and realistic surfing experience.

With a focus on full body fitness, SURFSET® Toronto’s workouts build balance, core strength, agility, aerobic conditioning, power, and coordination. Combining rotational core training with isometric movements to build a long lean torso, the workouts elevate the heart rate to torch fat with Wave Runners, Shark Kicks, Duck Dives and of course, the signature surf move, The Pop-Up.

SURFSET® Toronto’s efficient workouts provide maximum results in just a short period of time; a single session can burn anywhere from 500-900 calories in just 45 minutes.

SURFSET® Toronto has four signature programs to deliver top results for all fitness levels: SURFSET® Balance (yoga-inspired), Burn (high-intensity), Build (strength and definition), and Blend (core and combination of all programs).  Each program is structured in custom intervals to stimulate the body. From improving stability and control, to burning fat, building core strength and sculpting lean muscle, there is a class suitable for every personal fitness need.

The new studio, featuring a modern minimalist design with genuine reclaimed wood finishing touches, has been custom renovated uniquely for the SURFSET® Toronto program.

SURFSET® Toronto has been introduced by long time friends Alexandra Vinichenko, Lua Emilia, and Sofia Moksyakova. With backgrounds ranging from finance and economics to marketing and advertising, these Certified SS-T1 SURFSET Trainers, in their 20s, have combined their passion for health and fitness with the dream of entrepreneurship.

Quebec singer, songwriter instrumentalist and Platinum Artist Florence K to support Unison Benevolent Fund, becoming Unison Spokesperson

Toronto, ON – November 7, 2013
Florence-K-ILY-Album-Cover1The Unison Benevolent Fund is thrilled to announce that Florence K will represent the charity its efforts to reach a target launch goal of $1 million dollars.

Over the course of her incredible career, Florence K has sold in excess of 250,000 albums, performed over 300 concerts and has won 2 Felix Awards. Her new album, I’m Leaving You, will be released October 8th, and she will be using the platform of her new record release to bring awareness to this new charity, that serves musicians and music professionals at times of need.

Every recording and show requires an invisible network of professionals working collectively to help create my records, my shows. Many people on my team are self-employed and live without the support of a safety net; no benefits, limited resources. When a crisis occurs, its impact can be devastating,” says Florence K. “I am thrilled that there is now an organization that will support the music community, help individuals through hard times, and help get them back on their feet.”

The Unison Benevolent Fund is a non-profit charitable organization that provides counseling, emergency relief, and benefit programs for those in the Canadian music community who face personal or professional challenges due to hardship, illness, unemployment or economic difficulties.

To date, Unison has raised over $850,000. The target to activate the benefit programs within the fund is $1 Million. In the meantime, counseling and referral programs are available at www.unisonfund.com.

Unison Board of Director’s Chair, Jodie Ferneyhough stated, “Florence is a fantastic artist and a truly compassionate person. We hope that by her example and leadership, others will follow”.

Back by popular demand, Mother Nature Partnership presents Question Period this December 2, 2014 at The Drake Underground hosted by Orphan Black’s Kristian Bruun and The Animal Project’s Hannah Cheesman

Toronto, ON – November 5, 2014

Question-Period1

Mother Nature Partnership presents its second Question Period trivia night on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at The Drake Underground (1150 Queen Street West) for $15, hosted by Orphan Black’s Kristian Bruun and The Animal Project’s Hannah Cheesman.

With a range of general knowledge and period-related questions, teams of four will compete against each other during three rounds of 10 trivia questions. Prizes will be awarded to teams with the most correct answers and the best name. Tickets can be purchased at: http://bit.ly/1i6929A

Mother Nature Partnership is a leader in menstrual heath programming that empowers women and girls to live their lives to the fullest by connecting individuals with access to healthy and informed menstrual health care. This evening of trivia will raise vital funds that will go directly to providing 1,000 girls with menstrual health programming at five high schools in Cameroon in January 2015.

“Mother Nature Partnership is a feminist organization that allows girls to go to school, and allows women to work a job, make money and support themselves when menstruating,” says Cheesman. “Can you imagine being shut out of your daily routine simply because you don’t have the pads, tampons or cup you need? Nope, me neither. So let’s make it unimaginable for every single person on earth.”

Mother Nature Partnership believes every woman and girl in the world should be free to live her life to the fullest. In 2014, its programming, with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, provided 5,000 women in Cameroon with health information and reusable menstrual supplies, empowering them to fully participate in all aspects of life in their community. When equipped with healthy menstrual care, girls are free to attend school and women are free to earn a living, laying a strong foundation for a life of knowledge and self-sufficiency.

Toronto’s Casey House celebrates the success of the 21st annual Art With Heart, raising $720,000 for compassionate HIV/AIDS care

Toronto, ON – October 16, 2014

Casey-House-Art-With-Heart-Logo1-159x300Presented by TD, Toronto’s Casey House is celebrating the success of its signature fundraising event, Art With Heart, which raised $720,000 for compassionate HIV/AIDS during the evening of October 7, 2014.

Now in its 21st year, this annual contemporary auction and reception took place at The Carlu (444 Yonge Street) and raised essential funds for the organization. Featuring some of the country’s most celebrated contemporary artists, the funds raised will benefit Casey House initiatives including sending skilled teams of registered nurses and workers into clients’ homes, providing rehabilitative care and recreation therapy at Casey House, and bringing specialized HIV nursing care via partner clinics to marginalized people who lack access to treatment.

“Today, more people in Toronto are living with HIV than in 1988, when we first opened Casey House’s doors,” says Steven Endicott, Chief Development Officer, Casey House. “Not only do events like Art With Heart connect us with our community, but they allow us to raise the necessary funds to better assist people in Toronto living with this very challenging disease.”

Since the inception of Art With Heart, over $6 million has been raised with the generous bids and donations from Casey House supporters, donors and art lovers.

Art With Heart has consistently promoted excellence in Canadian contemporary art. A curatorial committee of prominent artists, curators, collectors, art enthusiasts and gallery owners select works by emerging and established Canadian artists. From oil on canvas to digital photography, supporters and art collectors alike were drawn to this year’s incredible collection from some of Canada’s most celebrated artists including Douglas Coupland, Kim Dorland, Erik Olson, and many more.

Art With Heart 2014 featured limited edition work by the collaborative duo Nicholas Pye and Sheila Pye. Their photograph series Unspoiled is a body of work that evolved out of a desire to ‘perform’ Nicholas and Sheila’s shared personal bond using nature and landscape as territory. A few of these works may still be purchased at www.artwithheart.ca.

In addition to showcasing the works of established Canadian artists, Art With Heart continued its support of emerging artists who push boundaries and influence change.

Max and Shred is about an unlikely friendship that forms when an easy-going superstar snowboarder moves in with a neurotic superstar academic and his family. The show centres on the boys’ evolving relationship as they navigate the trials of teenage life including school, dating and popularity.

Jean-Michel’s character, Lloyd Ackerman, is the patriarch of the household, and yet he’s usually more childish than the rest of them. Always wanting to hang with his kids, Lloyd likes to think of himself as a fun dad. Now with Max in the house, Lloyd can live out his father-son sporting hopes – much to the relief of his son.

Jean-Michel can be recognized for his roles in television series including Space’s Orphan Black, Global’s Rookie Blue, CTV’s Flashpoint, HBO Canada’s Transporter, Discovery Channel’s Mayday, Showtime’s Jeremiah, and the French series Ramville and Météo+.

Additionally, Jean-Michel’s film credits include Take This Waltz (TIFF 2011), John A: Birth of a Nation, Foxfire (TIFF 2012), Change of Plans, the BravoFact short She Sings For Me and What We Have, which was screened at the 2014 Atlantic Film Festival and the 2014 Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival.

Born in Toronto, and raised in Toronto, England and Ottawa, Jean-Michel grew up in a household rich with arts and creativity, building an interest in acting at an early age. Following graduation from a three-year professional theatre program at Studio 58 in Vancouver, he was invited to join the Birmingham Conservatory of Classical Theatre Training at the Stratford Festival; he went on to perform choice roles over four repertory seasons in productions The Tempest, As You Like It, Merchant of Venice and Noises Off, earning him a John Hirsch Award for Most Promising Actor and a Globe and Mail review that exclaimed “A star is born.”

After playing Molière in Toronto and at Montreal’s renowned Théâtre du Nouveau Monde, Jean-Michel was invited to participate in the inaugural Actors Conservatory at the Canadian Film Centre, where he trained with Kiefer Sutherland, Norman Jewison, and Sarah Polley, to name a few.

When not working, Jean-Michel Le Gal enjoys a number of outdoor activities including archery, fishing, boating, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and backcountry camping. His indoor pursuits include playing guitar and piano, watching theatre, the opera and art galleries. Currently, Jean-Michel lives in Toronto, but his second home is a family farm in Quebec, Canada.

Over the last 10 years, Jean-Michel has been sharing his knowledge of the classics in both English and French with school children. He also helps disadvantaged youth to write, develop and perform their own plays.

Introducing Yorkville’s newest hair salon, the Anthony Passero Salon offering patrons the ultimate beauty experience

Toronto, ON – September 22, 2014

AnthonyPasseroThe Anthony Passero Salon is thrilled to announce the opening of its brand new salon located in the heart of Yorkville at 114 Cumberland Street on the second floor.

Faced with a devastating fire in early 2014, the salon’s new location has been built to embody the new direction of the Anthony Passero Salon. Much larger in space than the previous site, the salon is now able to accommodate twice the amount of guests. The modern design and concept of the space was visualized by Anthony Passero himself to offer both old and new clientele the ultimate beauty salon experience. The bright, open space allows clients to feel relaxed throughout their appointment and leave feeling confident and uplifted.

“Our stunning new space fits all of our ideas, it’s a great new location to work with,” says Anthony Passero. “We’re back on track, happier, and more motivated than ever. With diverse staff ranging in age and style to this beautiful atmospheric space with multiple offerings, this is only the beginning of Anthony Passero Salon.”

Offering shiatsu and scalp massages, refreshments, and a relaxed environment, the salon’s key focus is their clients’ experience. With clean finishes and minimal design distractions, including a welcoming guest check-in space, clients are made to feel comfortable and at home no matter the length of their appointment. Friendly, down to earth, and experienced the Anthony Passero Salon staff ensure clients receive a tailored salon experience based on individual hair care needs and desires.

The Anthony Passero Salon has teamed up with L’Oreal Professional and Kevin Murphy to help create the very best in hair design. Additionally, products are displayed on the salon’s art-like retail wall comprised of various picture frames, allowing clients to curiously browse without being overwhelmed.

With an early interest in hair and fashion, Anthony Passero knew he wanted to be a hairdresser at only six years old. By age 12, he began shaping, cutting, and styling hair, all from watching other stylists and learning on his own. Eventually, Anthony began working at Salon Eskada in St. Catherine’s, Ontario, where he was mentored by the salon owner and lead stylist. Anthony later moved to Toronto to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce from Ryerson University. Following graduation, he immediately enrolled in Marvel Beauty Schools where he gained more confidence and knowledge, and developed a love for the Yorkville neighbourhood.

In 2009, Anthony began working with veteran hairstylist Robin Barker. For five years, Anthony was mentored while refining his skills; eventually granted the chance to take over Robin’s empire, he made the most of this opportunity and opened Anthony Passero Salon.

From October 23 – November 2, 2014, Anthony Passero Salon is participating in the sixth annual Beautylicious. Showcasing 60 Bloor-Yorkville beauty, health, and wellness specialists, participants have the opportunity to indulge in an array of specially priced hair care, skin care, spa and wellness packages.

Acknowledging the importance of philanthropy, the Anthony Passero Salon also participates in the annual Cut-A-Thon for Parkinson’s. The event is the highlight of Parkinson’s Awareness Month, offering participants the opportunity to visit an elite salon and receive professional hair care products, while raising funds and awareness for Parkinson’s.
