FROM TEENS TO AGING PARENTS – MAKING IT WORK

More than 43 million Americans provide care for someone older than 50 who is aging or disabled. Nearly 1 in 10 women ages 45-56 is a member of the sandwich generation, taking care of an aging parent as well as raising her own children. Boomers who delayed childbearing are being challenged into their late 60s, and beyond.

The “sandwich generation” is dually tasked with raising children who are seeking greater independence at a time when aging parents require greater attention and care. Treading lightly with both groups is a guiding principle suggested by Georgina Cannon, the award-winning educator, therapist and author of, The Third Circle Protocol, How to Relate to Yourself and Others.

Are you wishing you could understand your teen better? Are you grieving the loss of the connection you had with your teen before puberty hit? Parents are challenged to manage change and keep an open heart in the face of resistance on this side of the sandwich generation.

As the door closes on childhood, another opens to adolescence. Cannon’s wisdom in The Third Circle Protocol suggests that a family’s emotional well-being depends on considered thought in this moment of change. Cannon asks the reader to think about the current contract, the one formulated some time ago, the one that is not working anymore. Start by considering what you needed in the beginning – the words and feeling you felt that were non-negotiable at that time. What did you want regarding performance, interaction and responsibility? What were you prepared to give to your child, including unconditional love? The Third Circle Protocol guides the reader to begin the discussion after completing these steps to predetermine success. Cannon says that when you both acknowledge that things have changed, and that you acknowledge that you are examining your expectations, the likelihood of bringing your teen into your new expectations will 99 percent of the time get a positive response. Establish your values and priorities next. When thwarted, always return to the contract remembering the goal short term and long term.

Is the heavy-handed, ‘I know best’ approach getting in the way of loving, listening and helping aging parents to reconcile declining health and the need for autonomy? Cannon suggests that communication with an aging parent at a vulnerable time in their life requires a different approach than one might use in other relationships. She suggests starting by understanding the parent’s value system first before examining your own. The reason is simple, parents have been a part of our lives from the beginning and often still see us as children. Handling situations while understanding the intimacy of this lifelong relationship requires a light tread.

Cannon’s guidelines are straightforward and common sense. Start the conversation early before a crisis arises and before circumstances become more difficult. Communicate without ego or ‘positioning plays’, such as, ‘I know best’. Seek clarity from the parent about their wishes rather than acting on your beliefs. The author reminds us that our parents have much more life experience than we do, and they know what they want. You and Your Aging Parents, a helpful chapter, provides guidelines full of wisdom to empower and support the reader throughout the changes aging parents experience, and the attendant conversations that will follow.

In each chapter of The Third Circle Protocol, Cannon includes worksheets to support and guide the reader to effective assessment of a situation and worksheets for reflection. Skills are built and when applied bring the reader greater effectiveness in relationships with loved ones. The reader may return time and again to the worksheets to refocus, strengthen skills and stay on track towards the results sought. Change can be managed effectively while building greater intimacy and understanding across the generations. Cannon makes doing so easy, practical and effective with The Third Circle Protocol.

Toronto, ON- Myseum of Toronto’s second annual Myseum Intersections is well under way and if you haven’t yet made it to an event, there’s five major events remaining that you won’t want to miss. The festival features 36 projects exploring the city’s natural, cultural, and historical diversity bringing together community members from the west to east end. The non-profit organization presents a wide range of programming that will inspire a deeper appreciation for the richness of our city.

This years Myseum Intersections 2017 will run until March 31, 2017, be sure to check out the festivities.

 

The NOT JUST NUMBERS event takes place on March 22, 2017 at the Toronto Reference Library Beeton Hall, 789 Yonge St, Toronto. Not Just Numbers is an interactive mystery game that will debut at the Myseum Intersections festival. The objective of this event is so that community members and scholars can come together to uncover the identities and life stories behind the Canadian census. Attendees will get the change to sift through historical photographs, newspapers, maps, and other clues to solve the mysteries behind each entry. The event runs from 6-8PM.

 

The GAY AND NIGHT event takes place from March 20 to April 3, but the opening reception take place on March 24, 2017 at the Glad Day Bookshop 499 on Church St. Gay & Night is a creative historical exhibition honouring Toronto’s early LGBTQ+ community.  Juicy archive materials will meet shadow puppet animation videos in order to effectively illustrate the forgotten moments from Toronto’s queer past. Gay & Night envisions a complicated but inspiring past  future of the LGBTQ+ community in Toronto and the opening reception will run from 8PM-12AM.

 

The FUTURE(ING) THE PAST event runs from March 25 – March 26 at the Cahoots Theatre Unit 3, 388 Queen St E.

Future(ing) the past is an exhibition exploring history through a series of vignettes and artistic situations that re-envision stories, events, characters, productions, and actual physical spaces that belong to the past 30 years of existence for Cahoots Theatre. The exhibition runs from 11AM-4PM and is created by 5 artists Cahoots believes will shape the future of Canadian theatre.

The BEING HEARD event runs takes place on March 23, 2017 at the Gladstone Hotel from 6-9PM.

Workman Arts and Raconteurs Storytelling co-present an evening of storytelling at the Gladstone Hotel.  The evening’s stories will have a mental health focus and will be told by both Workman Arts members and participants from the Raconteurs network.

DO YOU SEE WHAT I SEE? The event takes place from January 27 – May 31 at the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre, 2 Colonel Samuel Smith Park Dr. The Lakeshore Grounds represent many different histories: Indigenous, educational, environmental, and psychiatric. The historic Do you see what I see tour  invites guests to “see” the Lakeshore Grounds with a fresh set of eyes.

After 10 successful years, Harlem Restaurant located at 67 Richmond St. E. will be closing their doors on March 12, 2017. Their second location, Harlem Underground on Queen St. W., will continue to serve up their famous Caribbean and soul food alongside a commitment to the community.

 

Carl Cassell and former co-owner Carl Allen opened the doors to Harlem Restaurant 10 years ago, to create a space for people to enjoy food, art, music and cocktails. The restaurant was inspired by the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, and celebrates the joy of Toronto’s cultural diversity and the art of entertaining.

 

Harlem represents a culinary tribute to Afro-American/ Afro-Caribbean culture through music and food. A local landmark for regular live tunes, art exhibitions, and community events in a contemporary space that’s reminiscent of another era, Harlem has hosted soul, jazz, Motown, pop, blues, R&B and funk performances.

 

“We sold the building. Someone’s going to use it for another restaurant,” owner Carl Cassell explains. “We’ve been there for 10 years. In the restaurant business, that’s like an eternity. It’s very rare that a restaurant ever gets to close on its own terms. We’re glad about that.”

 

As a decade of food, entertainment, and art comes to an end for the Richmond St location, Harlem Restaurant encourages people to come out to the closing event. To attend, guests can RSVP to the Facebook event or make a reservation on the Harlem Restaurant website.

 

To honour the closing there will be two events: on March 11^th former co-owner DJ Carl Allen will be spinning along with guest DJs, and on March 12^th at 1pm they will host a brunch for family and friends.

On March 6, 2017, at the Toronto City Hall Rotunda, Myseum of Toronto is launching its second annual festival of free exhibits and events exploring the city’s natural, cultural, and historical diversity. The Myseum Intersections 2017festival kicks off with a public celebration of Toronto’s 183^rd birthday.

 

Through the end of March, Myseum Intersections invites the public to experience how Toronto’s cultures intersect and converge to create a new understanding of the city’s multiple dimensions, illuminating the past, present, and future.

 

The festival features 36 projects that take place at venues throughout Toronto, and explores historic and contemporary issues presented via exhibits, events, and interactive community experiences. Myseum Intersections presents a wide range of programming that will inspire a deeper appreciation for the richness of our city.

The event celebrating Indigenous filmmakers across Canada is presented in advance of National Canadian Film Day 150 (NCFD 150), in partnership with VIFF

 

 

VANCOUVER (February 23, 2017) — REEL CANADA introduces Beyond 150 Years: An Acknowledgement of Cinematic Territory (Beyond 150), celebrating the impact of Indigenous cinematic stories and highlighting particular works and filmmakers from the REEL CANADA catalogue that have created, and continue to create, shifts within the larger cinematic landscape. In partnership with the Vancouver International Film Festival, Beyond 150 will span three days from March 5th to 7th as part of the national events leading up to National Canadian Film Day 150 (NCFD 150).

 

“It is a tremendous pleasure to present the Beyond 150 event in Vancouver as a small tribute to the deep cultural impact that Indigenous filmmakers have had on the Canadian film scene. As we approach NCFD 150, these three days will serve as a reminder of the many contributions that Indigenous peoples have made to the film industry,” said Jack Blum, Executive Director, REEL CANADA.

 

Beyond 150 features a schedule encompassing an array of events over the three-day period that offers FREE public film screenings, artist talks and presentations, a short lecture, new media, virtual reality, and a high school screening. It will kick off with an Opening Night Reception on Sunday, March 5th, at 7pm PST, hosted by Indigenous multimedia artist Ronnie Dean Harris. Cultural leader Bob Baker will deliver the welcoming speech, followed by a performance from Spakwus Slulum (Eagle Song Dancers), and audio/visual projections by artist Bracken Hanuse Corlett.

 

Monday, March 6th, and Tuesday, March 7th, will offer a unique opportunity for Vancouver’s secondary students and the general public to participate in intimate discussions and screenings of a selection of Indigenous films including Angry Inuk (Alethea Arnaquq-Baril), Highway of Tears (Lisa Jackson), Four Faces of the Moon (Amanda Strong), Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance (Alanis Obomsawin) and Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (Zacharias Kunuk).

 

“We are very fortunate to have such a rich group of Canadian Indigenous filmmakers appearing throughout this unique three-day event. This personal tragedy led Roy to examine the Criminal Justice system and to attend law school. He has taken on difficult cases with a wide variety of clients who have found themselves in impossible circumstances.  Roy approaches his clients with intelligence and compassion as he knows first-hand that there is always more behind a situation than the charges a person faces.
