RNS Concert Productions brings Buena Vista Social Club’s Eliades Ochoa to spice up three Canadian cities

Canada’s RNS Concert Productions proudly presents Cuba’s Grammy Award winning Buena Vista Social Club in three intimate evenings with legendary guitarist and singer, Eliades Ochoa; one of the key members and contributors of the Buena Vista Social Club. With roots in “guajira” (Cuban country) fans will enjoy a authentically Cuban sound this is a combination of country, salsa and traditional rock.

Eliades Oracha will be shaking up the stage with his eight piece band when the tour kicks off in Montreal on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at L’Astral Music Hall. The following day Friday, April 27, 2012 he will be performing at Ottawa’s Museum of Civilization Grand Hall. Closing the Canadian tour dates will be a performance in Toronto at the Opera House on Saturday, April 28, 2012.

The cultural phenomenon, Eliades Ochoa, is a living testament to the universal popularity of Cuban “son” music. Although a younger member of the Buena Vista Social Club, he is backed by a nearly half century long music career and has become something of an elder statesman. Eliades Ochoa picked up his first instrument at the age of six and by his early teens was the leader of the legendary group Cuarteto Patria. His trademark cowboy hat and penchant for wearing black has dubbed him as ‘Cuba’s Johnny Cash’. Eliades Ochoa is considered one of the most important Cuban ‘soneros’ of all time and guardian of traditional Cuban music.

Recruited into Buena Vista Social Club, Elides Ochoa immediately became internationally recognizable for his recordings and films of his performance of the traditional Cuban song “Chan Chan” with the late Compay Segundo.

img-BuenaVistaThe original line up of the Buena Vista Social Club made only three concert appearances, two at Amsterdam’s ‘Carré Theatre’ and the final legendary show at New York’s ‘Carnegie Hall’. The latter was filmed by Wim Wenders as the climax of his successful documentary also named “Buena Vista Social Club”, and the concert recording was released 10 years later as Buena Vista Social Club ‘At Carnegie Hall’.

Having performed live for over five million fans, Elides Ochoa and his band have released several recordings, keeping the sounds of traditional Cuban music alive for generations of new fans worldwide. Eliades Ochoa’s latest album, AfroCubism was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album in 2012.

The upcoming performances at the Museum of Civilization Grand Hall, L’Astral Music Hall and the Opera House will allow Eliades Ochoa’s fans a rare, intimate and interactive experience with the iconic performer and his legendary band.

Buena Vista Social Club is a registered trademark of World Circuit Limited.

500 Toronto students takeover 30 TTC / PATH locations to raise donations and perform for Youth Without Shelter

Toronto – January 19, 2012

One third of homeless Canadians are between the ages of 16 and 24. That is 65,000 young people without a place to call home tonight. On February 10th, 500 students from 20 GTA schools are coming together for the second year of Tokens4Change, a one day event raising TTC tokens and donations for Youth Without Shelter (YWS).

Student volunteers will be taking over 30 TTC stations and PATH locations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. At stations across the city, commuters can expect to see canvassers or student led performances about youth homelessness.

“When commuters walk by, they are going to be blown away with what has been created, we have musicians, actors, dancers, poets and more”, says Scott Parish, Tokens4Change founder.

Serving over 1,000 homeless youth each year, YWS is there when youth need them most. YWS doesn’t just provide the immediate necessities to survive, they equip youth with the skills and support they need to thrive. For a homeless youth a token can be the first step to getting their lives back. Transit tokens are essential to allow them to use public transit to get to school, the doctor, and housing appointments.

With the support of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and sponsors like Barrick, Boston Pizza, SNC Lavalin, and Pattison Outdoor Advertising the event has more than doubled since last year. In 2011 Tokens4Change was only in 10 stations but was a huge success, raising $30,000 in one day and providing the most media coverage the shelter has seen since its start in 1986.

The centre of the event this year is a party at Yonge-Dundas Square where Boston Pizza will be handing out fresh pizza and Toronto’s Number One Hit Music Station – KiSS 92.5 will be DJ’ing live on location throughout the day. At 3:30 p.m. there is also a 30 minute show lead by Project: Humanity of all the student performances created for the day – Media are encouraged to attend.

Local non-profit organization, Project: Humanity (PH), raises awareness through the arts and leads workshops with Toronto high schools and professional artists to create performances that shed light on youth homelessness and YWS‘ cause.

“These performances are a great opportunity for the students. It allows us to educate them on youth homelessness and then instantly empower them to do something about it,” says Daniel Chapman-Smith, Director of Events at PH.

Performance videos and photos will be available at www.tokens4change.com.

img-Tokens4ChangeAccording to YWS, youth rarely leave a happy home for the streets. Over 70 per cent have experienced some form of sexual, physical or emotional abuse. The longer youth remain homeless, the lower their chances of living a healthy life becomes. Prior to arriving at YWS, 40 per cent have gone without food for one day in the past week.

Initially established by teachers and guidance counsellors who saw a real need in the community for a safe-haven for local youth, YWS has grown considerably in the past 25 years. It remains the singular emergency residence and referral agency located in Etobicoke serving homeless youth. Now, YWS is not only able to offer a safe, warm bed for youth but they have evolved to offer a full circle of care: counselling, effective life skills program, employment guidance, placement in affordable housing and a Stay in School Program.

YWS was recognized in 2010 and again in 2011 by Charity Intelligence as one of the most highly effective charities warranting investment in Canada.

After a successful TIFF premiere, actress Tattiawna Jones brings a mix of physical attraction, attitude and supernatural powers to the fall television line-up

Toronto – November 29, 2011

As a rebel teenage daughter of parents played by Isabella Rossellini and Jason Patric, Tattiawna Jones stars in Guy Maddin’s latest film, Keyhole, which premiered on September 9, 2011 at the Toronto International Film Festival. In the film, Tattiawna joins the Pick family in Maddin’s chaotic and absurd world, following the odyssey of a gangster father, a drowned sister who has returned to life, a brother held hostage and an aimless journey from the back door of the house to the bedroom.

Following the TIFF premiere, Tattiawna switches gears and appears in the CBC family drama Heartland, playing the beautiful and confident cowgirl Kelly James. After the wife of handsome Heartland stable hand, Caleb, ditches him, he is on the rebound. Lo and behold, Kelly shows up at the ranch. Caleb falls for this woman who can hold her own and ride bucks like the rest of the guys. During an intimate encounter on the dance floor, some confessions, misunderstandings and false motives, Kelly punches him in the face. Can she believe that his attraction is genuine? Find out when the season premieres on CBC at 7:00 p.m. on September 18, 2011.

Keeping up with zesty themes of attraction, love and ulterior motives, Tattiawna just wrapped filming CBC’s Republic of Doyle playing Marie Booth, the every girl who has a good for nothing boyfriend owing her money. But, could she possibly be a new romantic prospect for Jake? Tattiawna stars alongside Allan Hawco, or Private Eye Jake Doyle, as he returns for a raucous second season of CBC’s Republic of Doyle, solving cases, dodging punches and chasing criminals through the hilly, colourful streets of seaside St. John’s. Viewers can tune in Wednesdays at 9 p.m. for Republic of Doyle Season 2.

Tattiawna Jones takes on another new and different character as Tanya Makin in GlobalTV’s police drama Rookie Blue. This time she is an innocent victim, stocked by a psychopath.

img-TattiawnaJonesLast season on Rookie Blue, a group of police rookies hit the streets for the first time with their training officers and learned how to walk the thin blue line. Now, the training wheels are off; they’re more experienced and ready to kick some serious butt.

In contrast to her role as a victim, Tattiawna then stars in CTV’s Flashpoint, playing Winnie Camden, a dispatch at the Strategic Response Unit (SRU), an elite branch of tactical cops who specialize in high-risk critical incidents. Trained in tactics and psychology, they deal with extreme situations, where split-second decisions could save a life…or cost one. Season 4 returns September 19, 2011 on CTV.

Tattiawna can also be seen in the Flashpoint Training Day interactive game where the character leads new recruits through various parts of the experience, all from her desk at HQ.

When you think that Tattiawna has done it all, again she stars in Showcase’s Lost Girl, this time playing a water nymph named Chloe, who has the power to help people pass through a portal between the mortal world and the supernatural.

Tattiawna Jones has other credits to her name, including Breakout Kings and Connor Undercover. It’s a long way from home for Jones, who originally hails from Manitouwadge, Ontario, located five hours north of Thunder Bay.
