Toronto’s youth can now join Canadian actor Austin MacDonald in the fight against hunger in support of Blessings in a Backpack

495-BlessingInABackpackTORONTO-All across Canada, too many children begin their school week on an empty stomach, w hich affects learning, health and behaviour. Canadian actor Austin MacDonald raises gently-used backpacks for Blessings in a Backpack, ensuring that less fortunate children have the benefit of proper nutrition. As a principal actor in HBO Canada’s Living in Your Car and Family Channel’s Debra, the shows generously donate backpacks in support of the charity.

Blessings in a Backpack is a unique program designed to support schoolchildren who do not have enough to eat on weekends. Implemented successfully in Toronto, Sault Ste. Marie, Cobourg and Vancouver, Blessings in a Backpack helps families who struggle with hunger or who are ‘food insecure’. While they rely on food banks and other resources during the week, many cannot satisfy weekend needs.

$100 feeds a child in the program for an entire school year. Following a donation, a school is chosen and a local grocer partners with the program to provide food for meals in the backpacks. Every Friday, students receive their backpacks with food that require little to no preparation. They return with their backpacks on Monday ready to learn.

Now, Canada’s youth can join Austin in the fight against hunger, by visiting the official Blessings in a Backpack website (www.blessingsinabackpack.ca). It provides ideas on how the community can get involved, by donating funds or holding a backpack drive with the simple click of a mouse.

As an ambitious young actor and community activist, Austin MacDonald uses his public recognition to raise awareness for Blessings in a Backpack, reaching audiences who identify with his beloved characters. He was recently casted as “Auzzie” in the new Family Channel series Debra, currently filming with Cookie Jar Productions. He has also had principal roles on the television series Living in Your Car and Doodlebops. Other credits to his name include The Ron James Show, The Rick Mercer Report, Little Mosque on the Prairie and Mudpit.

Austin’s feature credits include Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer and the Roxy Hunter series of movies. Most recently, Austin has worked with Dennis Lee on a project called Jesus Henry Christ, alongside Michael Sheen and Toni Collette.

According to a study by the Daily Bread Food Bank, children under the age of 18 represent approximately 40.7% of food bank clients in Canada and 50% of recipients are families with children. Additionally, the Toronto Foundation for Student Success has reported that 1 of 3 children in Toronto live in poverty and a recent study showed that nearly half of all Toronto schoolchildren go to school hungry.

Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behaviour, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program.

Quotes

“I grew up in a warm close family environment in a pleasant neighbourhood.”

-Austin Macdonald, Blessings in a Backpack

“I had a warm bed and food on the table every night. Through my experience as an actor and shooting in various cities and towns, I came to realize that not everyone had what I had and I felt I need to do something to help.”

TORONTO-This MANuary, join The Canadian Testicular Cancer Association (TCTCA) on Monday, January 31, 2011 for the MANsake Ball Cocktail Reception fundraising benefit held at The Berkley Church, from 6pm to 11:30pm (315 Queen St. E.)

The night will be hosted by Canadian actor, Ennis Esmer (Wipeout Canada, The Listener) and will include special performances by Juno Award winning artist, Liberty Silver, recording artists Yiannis Kapoulas, Donna Kroft, Donny Anderson and Tristan Ledingham, and comedian Rob Pue. Other notable guests include medical speakers, Dr. Peter Chung (Staff Radiation Oncologist-Princess Margaret Hospital) and Dr. Dean Elterman (Urologist-University of Toronto), TCTCA founder, Cheryl Perry and TCTCA National Spokesperson, Peter Laneas.

At the event, teams will select one volunteer to get “MANicured” on film (waist up only guys!), waxing his chest and/or back in front of a live audience. Video footage will be uploaded to the www.MANuaryforTC.ca website under the subheading, called “The Wax Museum.” It will also be considered for submission to the LIVESTRONG website www.BREAKCANCER.com. LIVESTRONG is a new social media site working in conjunction with the Guinness World Book of Records, allowing TCTCA to set the first record for the most guys to get power waxed at the same time in support of testicular cancer awareness in Canada.

Also during MANuary, TCTCA hosts the Do You Remember the 50’s Dinner Show? at Bingeman’s Marshall Hall, on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 6pm. The fundraising benefit presents Rex Stone, Canada’s premier Elvis impersonator, with additional impressions of Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly and Johnny Cash, and a performance by the Flying Dance Company.

On Saturday, January 22, 2011, restaurants in a pocket of Downtown Toronto, such as Elephant & Castle, Pickle Barrel Atrium and Milestones will be opening their arms and having groups of 40 to 50 people for an Appetizer-Crawl in support of TCTCA. Tickets are $40 (Tax Refundable) and 100% of the proceeds go to the cause.

Many men are not aware that testicular cancer is the most common cancer among males between the ages of 15 and 29. For this month of January, TCTCA (www.tctca.org) launches MANuary, encouraging men “to be aware of their own body,” through education and awareness programs.

TCTCA has distributed informational brochures, shower cards and posters to over 240 University/College institutions and 38 military bases across Canada, teaching men how to be aware of the signs and symptoms of testicular cancer.

Founded by Cheryl Perry in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, TCTCA has officially launched its office in Toronto, now reaching audiences across Canada. As a non-profit charitable organization, TCTCA introduces its National Spokesperson, actor and host Peter Laneas (Silent Sam, Searching for Where I Belong), who was diagnosed on December 19th, 2002, at the age of 26. Later, he developed a number of tumours in the other testicle, but caught it early. As a result, Peter had a double orchietomy.

An early diagnosis can help people avoid the undue pain, suffering and harsh treatments associated with the disease, and in some cases, even death. When detected and treated early, testicular cancer has one of the highest survival rates.

TCTCA aims to increase general awareness, encourage young men to become familiar with their bodies, distribute information to educational and healthcare institutions, and support research and clinical studies.

In its early development, TCTCA partnered with the Region of Waterloo Public Health unit for a two-year project and has continued to grow. It formed the “Check ‘Em” testicular cancer awareness campaign that has been an ongoing initiative since spring 2008, generating high-school student awareness, stressing the importance for young men to perform a regular Testicular Self Exam (TSE). Physical education departments have received a teaching kit composed of a lesson plan, simulated silicone testicles, brochures and DVD’s, all with the message of “why it is an issue and what can teens do about it.”

In the fall of 2008, TCTCA launched a mass media campaign, providing community-wide awareness, with the use of advertising on billboards, transit shelters, public service announcements and the official www.tctca.org website. Now that the pilot launch of the campaign has proven to be so effective, TCTCA is continuing to spread awareness, now with the launch of MANuary.

On April 22 of 2003, founder Cheryl Perry’s son Adam was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He was only 18-years-old and looking forward to his future after finishing high school. Adam had never heard of testicular cancer, nor had his family. Throughout the long hours of chemotherapy, Adam had a dream of educating other young men about the signs and symptoms of testicular cancer. He wanted to go into schools and teach students not to be afraid to talk about it. Just seven short months later, on November 9, 2003, Adam had passed away. However, Cheryl Perry vowed to make Adam’s dream come true, and with the help of friends and family, The Canadian Testicular Cancer Association TCTCA was formed.

On their own, without the guidance or protection of their professors, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever. But there are Dark Forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart.

Meanwhile, the Wizarding world has become a dangerous place for all enemies of the Dark Lord. The long-feared war has begun and Voldemort’s Death Eaters seize control of the Ministry of Magic and even Hogwarts, terrorizing and arresting anyone who might oppose them. But the one prize they still seek is the one most valuable to Voldemort: Harry Potter. The Chosen One has become the hunted one as Voldemort’s followers look for Harry with orders to bring him to the Dark Lord…alive.

Harry’s only hope is to find the Horcruxes before Voldemort finds him. But as he searches for clues, he uncovers an old and almost forgotten tale—the legend of the Deathly Hallows. And if the legend turns out to be true, it could give Voldemort the ultimate power he seeks.

Little does Harry know that his future has already been decided by his past when, on that fateful day, he became “the Boy Who Lived.” No longer just a boy, Harry Potter is drawing ever closer to the task for which he has been preparing since the day he first stepped into Hogwarts: the ultimate battle with Voldemort.
