A powerful and candid look on the story of love and the human connection, Falling Overnight is set to make its debut at the 2011 Cinequest Film Festival this March

San Jose, CA – March 1, 2011

A compelling story about a twenty-two year old Elliot Carson on the day before he has surgery to remove a brain tumor, Falling Overnight is set to premiere at the 2011 Cinequest Film Festival this March. Recently, it has also been picked as official selections at the 2011 Phoenix Film Festival and the 2011 Vail Film Festival.

Shot on a shoestring budget over fourteen summer nights, Falling Overnight tells the tale of Elliot Carson who is facing what could be his last night on this earth. Elliot’s path intersects with Chloe Webb, a beautiful young photographer who invites him to her art show.

Scared and alone, Elliot welcomes the distraction and as the night descends, Chloe takes him on an intimate and exhilarating journey through the city. But as morning approaches, and Chloe learns of Elliot’s condition, the magic of the evening unravels, and they must together face the uncertainty of Elliot’s future.

Falling Overnight was conceived by director Conrad Jackson in collaboration with writing partners Parker Croft and Aaron Golden. Inspired by the classic film Cléo from 5-7 (which follows two hours in the life of a French singer as she walks the streets of Paris awaiting biopsy results), the writing team attempted to capture the fear, isolation, and numbness that comes from being “one of the sick people”, while trying to highlight the magical and temporary nature of moments of love.

Instead of filling the story with the heightened, overly dramatic dialogue and scenes that populate much of contemporary film, the filmmakers created a lifelike world for their characters, pouring their own stories, experiences, dreams, and regrets into the script. Ultimately, it is real life that Elliot will miss, not a fantasy “movie” world.

Leading a dedicated and hard-working skeleton crew coordinated by producers Jed Rhein and Elizabeth Jackson, the filmmakers worked efficiently but meticulously to capture life’s most honest moments: a full body laugh, a dropped word, an embarrassed smile. Filmed in open restaurants, underground tunnels, and only-reached-through-a-half-hour-hike mountaintops, Falling Overnight was micro-budget filmmaking at its most vibrant and ambitious.

“I was blown away by the direction and the actors were superb,” says Marsha Oglesby of Brooklyn Films “It was a real gem.”

The film also boasts a unique soundtrack, featuring a hauntingly talented list of musicians, which includes Yukon Blonde, Blue Hawaii, Joe Organ, Toolshed, Keith Chenier, Snowbling and Vikas Kohli.

About the Cast and Crew:

Conrad Jackson co-created and produced ABC’s sitcom Freddie with business partner Freddie Prinze Jr., as well as developing television shows for MTV, Nickelodeon, SyFy, and Disney. Conrad won the PBS Independent Lens Audience award for directing and best cinematography from the Boston International film festival for his film, L.A. Noir. Recently, Jackson wrapped production on Adult Life, the first pilot to come out of his new production company DPO, and is currently developing Quantum Hunter, with Kickstart Productions, a new pilot for Syfy. Conrad is also a recipient of the Oprah Winfrey Academic Achievement Award in film at the Loyola Marymount University.

Aaron Golden is the author of stage plays Labor Pains and To Tree. Originally from London, Ontario, Canada, Golden graduated from the University of Illinois’ theatre conservatory, before moving out to Los Angeles in early 2008. His screenplay, Dead Black Clown, was a semi-finalist in the 2009 Scriptshadow screenwriting contest, and most recently he co-developed the pilot Adult Life with Conrad Jackson, currently being pitched to cable networks in Los Angeles.

img-FallingOvernightBorn and raised in Los Angeles, Jed Rhein has produced music videos, the independent feature film The Bet, and the award-winning film L.A. Noir. L.A. Noir wrapped up the 2007 festival circuit with over 25 official selections worldwide, winning Best Cinematography at Boston International and capping the run with the coveted Audience Award for PBS Network. In 2009, Rhein produced the feature film The Outside, released domestically by Monarch Distribution in July 2010. Most recently, Rhein produced a music video for Grammy award winning artist Butch Walker and the pilot Adult Life.

Elizabeth Jackson was born on a Native American reservation in Arizona, and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She studied film at Loyola Marymount, and picked up acting on the side. After four years of college, she had finished several screenplays, and began to work regularly in television and film. Most recently, Elizabeth completed a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and continues to act (including the role of Samantha in Falling Overnight). Elizabeth’s other producing credits include the award-winning short L.A. Noir and two television pilots.

Falling Overnight is Parker Croft’s first feature film as a writer and executive producer. Parker Croft made his film acting debut in Hooking Up with co-stars Corey Feldman and Bronson Pinchot. He went on to play a supporting role in Were The World Mine, winner of 11 Jury Awards and 10 Audience Awards, and recently appeared in Nuclear Family alongside Ray Wise and Corin Nemec. Parker’s television credits include the pilots Back Nine (cr. Jason Filardi), Adult Life (cr. Conrad Jackson), and Jack and Steve (cr. Pam Dawber), as well as a guest star on Nip/Tuck.

Emilia Zoryan was born in the Soviet Union and immigrated to the United States at the age of four. A trained ballet dancer, Emilia began her career in music videos, commercials, and modeling, before making her film debut in Shane Stanley’s My Trip to the Dark Side.

Toronto’s youth can now join Canadian actor Austin MacDonald in the fight against hunger in support of Blessings in a Backpack

495-BlessingInABackpackTORONTO-All across Canada, too many children begin their school week on an empty stomach, w hich affects learning, health and behaviour. Canadian actor Austin MacDonald raises gently-used backpacks for Blessings in a Backpack, ensuring that less fortunate children have the benefit of proper nutrition. As a principal actor in HBO Canada’s Living in Your Car and Family Channel’s Debra, the shows generously donate backpacks in support of the charity.

Blessings in a Backpack is a unique program designed to support schoolchildren who do not have enough to eat on weekends. Implemented successfully in Toronto, Sault Ste. Marie, Cobourg and Vancouver, Blessings in a Backpack helps families who struggle with hunger or who are ‘food insecure’. While they rely on food banks and other resources during the week, many cannot satisfy weekend needs.

$100 feeds a child in the program for an entire school year. Following a donation, a school is chosen and a local grocer partners with the program to provide food for meals in the backpacks. Every Friday, students receive their backpacks with food that require little to no preparation. They return with their backpacks on Monday ready to learn.

Now, Canada’s youth can join Austin in the fight against hunger, by visiting the official Blessings in a Backpack website (www.blessingsinabackpack.ca). It provides ideas on how the community can get involved, by donating funds or holding a backpack drive with the simple click of a mouse.

As an ambitious young actor and community activist, Austin MacDonald uses his public recognition to raise awareness for Blessings in a Backpack, reaching audiences who identify with his beloved characters. He was recently casted as “Auzzie” in the new Family Channel series Debra, currently filming with Cookie Jar Productions. He has also had principal roles on the television series Living in Your Car and Doodlebops. Other credits to his name include The Ron James Show, The Rick Mercer Report, Little Mosque on the Prairie and Mudpit.

Austin’s feature credits include Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer and the Roxy Hunter series of movies. Most recently, Austin has worked with Dennis Lee on a project called Jesus Henry Christ, alongside Michael Sheen and Toni Collette.

According to a study by the Daily Bread Food Bank, children under the age of 18 represent approximately 40.7% of food bank clients in Canada and 50% of recipients are families with children. Additionally, the Toronto Foundation for Student Success has reported that 1 of 3 children in Toronto live in poverty and a recent study showed that nearly half of all Toronto schoolchildren go to school hungry.

Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behaviour, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program.

Quotes

“I grew up in a warm close family environment in a pleasant neighbourhood.”

-Austin Macdonald, Blessings in a Backpack

“I had a warm bed and food on the table every night. Through my experience as an actor and shooting in various cities and towns, I came to realize that not everyone had what I had and I felt I need to do something to help.”

Also during MANuary, TCTCA hosts the Do You Remember the 50’s Dinner Show? at Bingeman’s Marshall Hall, on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 6pm. The fundraising benefit presents Rex Stone, Canada’s premier Elvis impersonator, with additional impressions of Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly and Johnny Cash, and a performance by the Flying Dance Company.

Tickets are $40 (Tax Refundable) and 100% of the proceeds go to the cause.

Many men are not aware that testicular cancer is the most common cancer among males between the ages of 15 and 29. For this month of January, TCTCA (www.tctca.org) launches MANuary, encouraging men “to be aware of their own body,” through education and awareness programs.

TCTCA has distributed informational brochures, shower cards and posters to over 240 University/College institutions and 38 military bases across Canada, teaching men how to be aware of the signs and symptoms of testicular cancer.

Founded by Cheryl Perry in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, TCTCA has officially launched its office in Toronto, now reaching audiences across Canada. As a non-profit charitable organization, TCTCA introduces its National Spokesperson, actor and host Peter Laneas (Silent Sam, Searching for Where I Belong), who was diagnosed on December 19th, 2002, at the age of 26. Later, he developed a number of tumours in the other testicle, but caught it early. As a result, Peter had a double orchietomy.

An early diagnosis can help people avoid the undue pain, suffering and harsh treatments associated with the disease, and in some cases, even death. When detected and treated early, testicular cancer has one of the highest survival rates.

TCTCA aims to increase general awareness, encourage young men to become familiar with their bodies, distribute information to educational and healthcare institutions, and support research and clinical studies.

In its early development, TCTCA partnered with the Region of Waterloo Public Health unit for a two-year project and has continued to grow. It formed the “Check ‘Em” testicular cancer awareness campaign that has been an ongoing initiative since spring 2008, generating high-school student awareness, stressing the importance for young men to perform a regular Testicular Self Exam (TSE). Physical education departments have received a teaching kit composed of a lesson plan, simulated silicone testicles, brochures and DVD’s, all with the message of “why it is an issue and what can teens do about it.”

In the fall of 2008, TCTCA launched a mass media campaign, providing community-wide awareness, with the use of advertising on billboards, transit shelters, public service announcements and the official www.tctca.org website. Now that the pilot launch of the campaign has proven to be so effective, TCTCA is continuing to spread awareness, now with the launch of MANuary.

On April 22 of 2003, founder Cheryl Perry’s son Adam was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He was only 18-years-old and looking forward to his future after finishing high school. Adam had never heard of testicular cancer, nor had his family. Throughout the long hours of chemotherapy, Adam had a dream of educating other young men about the signs and symptoms of testicular cancer. He wanted to go into schools and teach students not to be afraid to talk about it. Just seven short months later, on November 9, 2003, Adam had passed away. However, Cheryl Perry vowed to make Adam’s dream come true, and with the help of friends and family, The Canadian Testicular Cancer Association TCTCA was formed.

In the episode, Tanya Kim’s portrait will be painted by three unique artists, Fiona Smyth, Derek Mainelle and Jean Miller Harding, with three different visions and interpretations. Tanya Kim’s identity is a secret to the artists prior to meeting them, with the only clue being the location. The artists are then given three hours to study, sketch and photograph Tanya, before they are given two weeks in their own studios to complete their work.

The episode concludes two weeks after the sitting, with the exciting unveiling of three completely different portraits, from which Tanya Kim will choose her favourite. The other two portraits will be auctioned off with proceeds going to the charity of her choice, Blessings in a Backpack, a philanthropic initiative to feed the future of Canada.

Widely recognized as anchor of CTV’s etalk, Tanya Kim is more than just one of Canada’s most familiar television personalities. Raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Tanya’s passion extends beyond entertainment and celebrity culture. Classically trained as a pianist and dancer, this Broadcast Journalism (specializing in Television) graduate started her TV career at Much Music. She went on to become the music reporter for CTV’s The Chatroom, and then became the special correspondent for the first two seasons of Canadian Idol, reporting on music and style.

Tanya’s role as etalk anchor has given her a slew of exciting opportunities, including hosting red carpets at the Academy Awards®, Juno Awards, Grammy Awards and reporting backstage with the artists at Live8 Canada. In July 2007, Tanya reported live from London during both the Convert for Diana and Live Earth. In February 2010, Tanya had the opportunity to report on entertainment news from the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games for CTV as well as for Olympic Morning.

Recognizing the importance of philanthropy, Tanya supports charities that are close to her heart. She shares her love of music with Canada’s youth through her role at MusiCounts, an organization that provides instruments to schools across the country. She travelled to Zambia in November 2008 as national spokesperson for CARE Canada to help launch their “I Am Powerful” initiative, and is also a Director of Blessings In A Backpack, a charitable organization headed by Hilary Duff, that provides meals for school-aged children in Canada and the US. In 2009, Tanya along with Ben Mulroney returned as hosts of Free The Children’s We Day youth empowerment events in Toronto and Vancouver.
